Context and commentary on verse 18.27
Shankara gives ‘lubdha’ two senses: one who craves another’s property, or one who will not part with his own money even at places of pilgrimage. ‘Harshashokanvita’ is joy when the wanted is gained and sorrow when the unwanted comes. Sridhara Swami takes ‘ragin’ as one with fond attachment to children and the like.
Ramanuja’s senses fit the workplace directly: the ‘ragin’ seeks fame, the ‘lubdha’ will not spend even the money the work requires, the ‘himsatmaka’ gets work done by making others suffer, and the ‘ashuchi’ lacks the purity the work requires. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
Ramanuja’s phrase ‘getting work done by making others suffer’ is still true. Denying workers fair wages, safety equipment and rest is today’s form of this rajas.
Greed that skimps on what the work needs ends up costly: savings on safety can end in an accident.
