Context and commentary on verse 18.26
After action, the three kinds of doer. Shankara takes ‘anahamvadin’ as one whose nature is not to say ‘I’, ‘dhriti’ as the power to hold steady, and ‘utsaha’ as energetic effort. For Sridhara Swami ‘anahamvadin’ is one without boastful speech, and ‘dhriti’ is courage.
Ramanuja’s definition of ‘dhriti’ is lovely: bearing the unavoidable hardship until the undertaken action is complete. ‘Utsaha’ is a mind eager to act. In an action such as war, one who is unchanged whether the means needed are found or not, whether the result comes or not, is the sattvic doer. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
Ramanuja’s words ‘bearing hardship until it is complete’ fit long treatments: finishing months of tuberculosis medicine completely is an example of dhriti.
When exam results come, good or bad, telling children ‘I am proud of your effort’ grows this evenness of mind in them.
