Context and commentary on verse 18.32
Tamasic understanding is like holding a mirror upside down. Ramanuja describes that reversal: taking adharma as dharma and dharma as adharma, the real as unreal and the unreal as real, the supreme as lower and the lower as supreme, understanding everything the wrong way round. According to Shankara it knows every object of knowledge in reverse.
Sridhara Swami gives a philosophical clarification: ‘buddhi’ is the inner organ, ‘jnana’ is its function, and ‘dhriti’ too is its function, so there is no repetition between this and the threefold knowledge told earlier. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
Addiction can turn understanding upside down like this: the very substance causing harm looks like the solution to the problem. This is not weakness but a condition needing treatment.
False health messages that call the harmful beneficial and the beneficial dangerous are a form of today’s ‘tamasic understanding’. The fears spread about vaccines are an example.
