ಯಯಾ ಧರ್ಮಮಧರ್ಮಂ ಚ ಕಾರ್ಯಂ ಚಾಕಾರ್ಯಮೇವ ಚ।
ಅಯಥಾವತ್ಪ್ರಜಾನಾತಿ ಬುದ್ಧಿಃ ಸಾ ಪಾರ್ಥ ರಾಜಸೀ ॥ 31 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
यया धर्ममधर्मं च कार्यं चाकार्यमेव च।
अयथावत्प्रजानाति बुद्धिः सा पार्थ राजसी ॥ 31 ॥

ayathāvatprajānāti buddhiḥ sā pārtha rājasī || 31 ||
ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಯಯಾ ಧರ್ಮಮ್ ಅಧರ್ಮಂ ಚ (यया धर्मम् अधर्मं च, yayā dharmam adharmaṃ ca) = ಯಾವುದರಿಂದ ಧರ್ಮ ಅಧರ್ಮಗಳನ್ನೂ (the understanding by which dharma and adharma)
- ಕಾರ್ಯಂ ಚ ಅಕಾರ್ಯಮ್ ಏವ ಚ (कार्यं च अकार्यम् एव च, kāryaṃ ca akāryam eva ca) = ಮಾಡಬೇಕಾದ್ದು ಮಾಡಬಾರದ್ದನ್ನೂ (and what should and should not be done)
- ಅಯಥಾವತ್ ಪ್ರಜಾನಾತಿ (अयथावत् प्रजानाति, ayathāvat prajānāti) = ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲವೋ (are known incorrectly)
- ಪಾರ್ಥ ಸಾ ಬುದ್ಧಿಃ ರಾಜಸೀ (पार्थ सा बुद्धिः राजसी, pārtha sā buddhiḥ rājasī) = ಪಾರ್ಥ, ಆ ಬುದ್ಧಿ ರಾಜಸ (that understanding, O Partha, is rajasic)

ಪಾರ್ಥ, ಧರ್ಮ ಅಧರ್ಮಗಳನ್ನೂ ಮಾಡಬೇಕಾದ್ದು ಮಾಡಬಾರದ್ದನ್ನೂ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿಯದ ಬುದ್ಧಿ ರಾಜಸ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
The understanding by which dharma and adharma, and what should and should not be done, are known incorrectly is rajasic, O Partha.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 18.31ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 18.31
ರಾಜಸ ಬುದ್ಧಿ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ತಲೆಕೆಳಗಲ್ಲ, ಅಸ್ಪಷ್ಟ. ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ‘ಅಯಥಾವತ್’ ಅನ್ನು ಸಂದೇಹಕ್ಕೆ ಆಸ್ಪದವಾಗುವಂತೆ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನು ನಿಖರವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ: ಸರಿಯಾಗಿರುವ ನಿಯಮವಿಲ್ಲದಿರುವುದು ರಾಜಸ, ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ವಿರುದ್ಧವಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿಯುವುದು ತಾಮಸ, ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ ಎರಡಕ್ಕೂ ಭೇದವಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
Rajasic understanding is not entirely upside down, it is unclear. Sridhara Swami takes ‘ayathavat’ as in a way that leaves room for doubt. Madhva states the difference exactly: lacking any assurance of being correct is rajasic, knowing things completely the wrong way round is tamasic, otherwise there would be no difference between the two.
ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ರಾಜಸ ಬುದ್ಧಿ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ ವಿಧಿಸಿದ ಧರ್ಮವನ್ನೂ ನಿಷೇಧಿಸಿದ ಅಧರ್ಮವನ್ನೂ ಎಲ್ಲ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲೂ ನಿರ್ಣಯಿಸಿ ತಿಳಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಎರಡು ಧರ್ಮಗಳನ್ನೂ ದೇಶಕಾಲಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಡಬೇಕಾದ್ದನ್ನೂ ಅದು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ.
According to Shankara rajasic understanding does not know with full determination the dharma enjoined by scripture and the adharma it forbids. Ramanuja says it does not rightly know the two kinds of dharma just described, nor what should be done in particular places and times.

When desire is strong, we look only for the information we want and ignore the rest. Asking for another opinion before big decisions is a remedy for this lack of clarity.
