This is a dialogue between disciple and guru. In the first eight verses the disciple asks how worship, with invocation, seat, bath and the rest, can be done to the Supreme Self, who has no attributes and is undivided.
From verse 9 to verse 33 the guru answers. He says that each item of worship is to be done as a piece of knowledge. In this way the order of outer worship becomes a discipline of inner knowing.

The disciple asks how worship can be done when there is the undivided reality, which is being, consciousness and bliss, of one form without alternatives, with no second.
Where is the Full to be invited? How can there be a seat for the support of all? Why water for the feet and the honour-offering for the clear one? How can the pure one need a sip of water?
How can the spotless one need a bath? How a garment for him who holds the universe in his belly? How a sacred thread for one without lineage or caste?
Why sandal paste for one who is unsmeared? Why a flower for one without desires? What ornament for one without particular features? What adornment for one without form?
What use are incense and lamps for the stainless witness of all? What offering of food could there be for one content in his own bliss alone?
How is betel fitting for him who delights the whole world? He is self-luminous consciousness, who lights up the sun and the rest.
How can there be a rite of waving lights for him whom the Shrutis sing? How circumambulation of the Endless? How a bow to the one thing that has no second?
What hymn can be made to him who cannot be known by the words of the Veda? How can there be a rite of dismissal for one who abides within and without?
The guru answers: I worship the Self-linga, bright as a jewel, seated in the heart-lotus in the city of Maya. With ablutions of the clear water of a mind like the river of faith, and with flowers of samadhi, I worship it daily so that I may not be born again.
One should invoke Shiva with the thought, I alone remain. Afterwards, contemplating the Self as established in itself is the arranging of the seat.
The knowledge that no dust of merit or sin clings to me is the foot-water that destroys all impurity. The knower should offer just that.
One should let go the cupped handful of water that is root ignorance, held since beginningless ages, and pour it over the Self-linga. That is the offering of the honour-water.
Indra and the others drink only a tiny share, a crore-th part of a droplet from a wave of the ocean of Brahman-bliss. To meditate thus is said to be the sipping of water.
All the worlds are flooded by the very water of Brahman-bliss, yet this Self cannot be wetted. To meditate thus is the ritual bath of the Self.
The sage should think that to reflect, I am the uncovered light of consciousness, is the fine garment of the Self-linga.
The firm conviction, I am the thread on which the garland of all the worlds, made of the three gunas, is strung, is held here to be the supreme sacred thread.
The reflection, this world mixed with many impressions is borne by me and by no other, is the sandal paste of the Self.
Giving up the workings of rajas, sattva and tamas serves as sesame and rice grains. With them one should worship the Self-linga daily, for the sake of living liberation.
One should worship Shiva, the Self-linga, with non-dual bilva leaves, free of the threefold distinction of Lord, guru and Self.
One should think of the giving up of all impressions as his incense. The wise should show the knowledge of the luminous Self as the lamp.
The great rice called the cosmic egg is the food offering to the Self-linga. Drink the sweet juice of bliss, and let death be the sauce poured over it.
One should remember that washing the hand soiled with the leavings of ignorance, using the water of knowledge, is the washing of the hands of the pure Self-linga.
For Shiva, the Supreme Self without qualities such as attachment, giving up the habit of objects coloured by attachment is the chewing of betel.
The knowledge that the Self is Brahman, a blazing sun that destroys the darkness of ignorance, is here the waving of lights to the Self.
Adorned with garlands of varied visions of Brahman is the vision of one’s nature as full bliss. One should remember that very vision as the offering of a handful of flowers.
Thousands of universes revolve in me, the Lord. To meditate, I am the unmoving, unchanging witness, is the circumambulation.
To reflect, I alone am to be revered by the world and there is none to revere other than me, is the salutation to one’s own Self-linga.
The right action done for the Self is said to be the thought that there is nothing to be done. Contemplating the Self beyond name and form is the chanting of his name.
Hearing about that God is the thought that there is nothing left to be heard. Reflection on the Self-linga is the thought that there is nothing left to be reflected on.
Deep meditation is the knowledge that there is nothing left to be meditated on. It is steadiness in the Self, free of all confusion and distraction.
Samadhi of the Self is not the mind wandering elsewhere. In it, what is sought is that the mind should rest in Brahman always.
One who performs, with a steady mind, this worship of his own Self-linga as set out in the Vedanta texts, whether until death or even for a moment… - 33 …
…casts off the whole net of evil impressions like dust from the feet. Shaking off the flood of sorrow born of ignorance, he fully attains the bliss of liberation.
About this hymn
This hymn is from the website of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham. Tradition ascribes it to Shankara Bhagavatpada. We give no date of composition.
It is in the form of a dialogue. Verses 1 to 8 are the disciple’s questions and verses 9 to 33 the guru’s answer. The answer follows the order of worship from invocation to the waving of lights, circumambulation and bow. After that come hearing, reflection, deep meditation and samadhi.
We give the text as it stands in the source. A few words are not clear. In verse 21 we take pibanandarasam as drink the juice of bliss, and in verse 31 ishyate as is sought. Verses 32 and 33 run on as one sentence, so we mark the join with dots in the meanings.

For life today
It is common for a family to puzzle over what to give for the birthday of an elder who already has everything. Whatever we bring, they may have it. In the end the time spent sitting and talking with them seems the best gift.
The disciple’s question in this hymn is much the same: what is to be offered to the one who is everything? The guru’s answer turns us inward. It says that the offering need not be an object and may be a piece of knowing, a letting go, a remembrance.
