O human being, worship the teacher of the world, worship the teacher of the world.

He is a sun to the lotus face of Aryamba, and a bee at the lotus feet of Aryajani (the husband of Arya, that is Shiva, or in another reading Aryamba’s husband). He is skilled in telling the eternal from the transient and is absorbed in contemplating the non-dual truth, which is consciousness.

About this hymn

This is a song from the Shankara Bhagavatpada group on the website of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham. The source names no author, so we name none. We give no date either.

The source gives the raga as Karnataka Devagandhari and the tala as Adi. The pallavi is one line and each charana has two lines. It is the usual way of such songs to return to the pallavi after the charanas.

In the last line Bharati Tirtha is named as the servant. We give the text as we received it. In the first line of the first charana the word as printed looks slightly off and may be meant as the accusative of bhanu, the sun. The meaning stays the same.

For the word aryajani we took as the main sense Shiva, husband of Arya, that is Parvati. In the other sense it names the husband of Aryamba.

For life today

When we sit down to tidy a drawer of old things, everything seems precious. It takes a little time to decide what to keep and what to let go.

This song names the skill of telling what lasts from what passes as the first quality of the teacher. It seems good to us to ask ourselves that one question in our everyday choices.
