This is a hymn of four verses in which the devotee tells Vani, Sarasvati, his shortcomings and asks for protection. The Goddess is called the swan of the Manasa lake of Vidhi, that is, of Brahma.
Each verse ends with the prayer vani pahi vidhimanasahamse. The devotee speaks harshly of himself, and that is a form of humility. This page gives the text in Kannada, Devanagari and Roman transliteration, and the meaning of each verse.

I am the one to be counted first among sinners, one who has gone far from virtuous people. As the lotus-eyed Vishnu protected the king of elephants, O Vani, swan of the Manasa lake of Brahma, protect me.
In this body, full of flesh, blood and filth, a foul-smelling dwelling and not lasting, I firmly hold the idea that this is myself. O Vani, swan of Brahma’s Manasa lake, protect me.
Worn down by the sickness of delusion and greed, with a heart-lotus scorched by the fear of birth and death, and lacking the motherly qualities that begin with peace and self-control, protect me, O Vani, swan of Brahma’s Manasa lake.
I am without study of the Upanishads, and too lazy even to bow at your lotus feet. You who hold a young parrot shining on your lotus hand, O Vani, swan of Brahma’s Manasa lake, protect me.
About this hymn

This is a prayer of confession. The first verse speaks of sin, the second of identifying with the body, the third of delusion, greed and fear of death, and the fourth of want of study and of bowing. Taking the body to be oneself, as in the second verse, is regarded in the Advaita tradition as the root ignorance.
Some words in the text are doubtful. We have taken asthiravarye in the second verse to mean not lasting. For mukhamatrviheenam in the third verse we have understood it as lacking the motherly qualities such as peace and self-control. One word in the fourth verse contains an invisible character, which does not change the sense.
The word sickness in the third verse is a figure for the faults of delusion and greed, and not a promise of curing bodily disease. Prayer and chanting do not replace medical treatment.

For life today
We have all watched a swan glide across a still pond without disturbing the water. Tradition also says that a swan takes the milk and leaves the water, a picture of discernment.
It is hard to name our shortcomings without hiding them, as the devotee of this hymn does, but learning begins there.
