Achala

Meditation

A quiet place to sit each day. Tap the circle, let a soft bell begin the sitting, and rest. The screen fades to black while you sit, and a bell tells you when it is over.

Free, with no ads. It opens in your browser and works offline once opened. To keep it on your phone, open it and choose Install, or on an iPhone tap Share and Add to Home Screen.

In a browser, keep the screen on while you sit: if the phone locks, the bells may not ring.

A look inside

Home: a circle to tap, 15 of 20 minutes sat today, and quick starts. A sitting: a soft glow on a dark screen, with the time remaining. Guided breathing: a circle that grows as you breathe in. Insights: hours, sittings, days sat and this week. The journal: each sitting with its day, length and a note.

What it does

A timer that stays out of the way

  • Sit for 5 to 60 minutes, any length you choose, or open-ended
  • Interval bells every 5 to 30 minutes, or one bell half-way
  • Save up to three favourite sittings as quick starts

Sounds made in the app

  • Four bells: singing bowl, temple bell, tingsha and deep gong
  • Gentle background sound if you like: rain, ocean, soft noise or a low drone

Guided breathing

  • A softly growing and shrinking circle to breathe with, and the words to follow
  • Slow even breathing, alternate-nostril breathing, the humming breath, box breathing, 4-7-8, or your own pattern
  • A pacer for the breath, nothing more: Achala makes no health claims

A journal that keeps count

  • Every sitting is saved: the day, the time, how long and what kind
  • Note how you feel after, if you wish, and add a few words
  • Hours, sittings and the days you sat, with a daily goal if you want one
