Ghatika
Focus timer
A calm timer for focused work. Begin a round, and a copper bowl fills slowly on a still pond while you work. When it is full, a soft bell tells you. Then rest for a few minutes, and begin again.
Free. It opens in your browser and works offline once opened. To keep it on your phone, open it and choose Install, or on an iPhone tap Share and Add to Home Screen.
In a browser, the bell rings while the page is open. A phone may quiet a page that is not on the screen, so keep Ghatika in view during a round.
A look inside
What it does
Rounds that suit the work
- A ghatika is the old Indian measure of 24 minutes: a copper bowl with a small hole, floating on water, that fills and sinks when its time is up
- 24 : 6, one ghatika, and 48 : 12, two ghatikas, for deeper work
- 25 : 5, the classic Pomodoro, 50 : 10, or your own lengths
- Flow: count up, and stop when the focus breaks; the break is worked out from how long you worked
- A longer break after a number of rounds, if you like
A quiet place to work
- Four bells: singing bowl, small bell, tingsha and temple bell, and a soft bell before the end if you wish
- A soft tick, and background sound if you like: rain, tanpura, temple bells far away, forest or a quiet room
- Light and dark, and text that can be made larger
Tasks and marks
- Write what a round is for before you begin
- Tasks with an estimate in rounds, grouped by subject, counted as you work
- Mark a stray thought or a call with one tap, without stopping
- After a round, note how it went, if you wish
Reports
- The time you focused each day, by subject, and the days in a row
- Your interruptions, and the hours of the day you work best
- Every round kept, and a spreadsheet of them whenever you want one
