ನಾರಾಯಣ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರ: ಕೃಷ್ಣ ರಾಮರ ಲೀಲೆಗಳ ನಾಮಮಾಲೆ

“ನಾರಾಯಣ ನಾರಾಯಣ ಜಯ ಗೋವಿಂದ ಹರೇ” ಎಂಬ ಪಲ್ಲವಿಯಿಂದ ಹೆಸರಾದ ಈ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರ ಭಜನೆ ಮಂಡಳಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಸಂಗೀತದ ಕಛೇರಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹಳ ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ. ಇದೊಂದು ನಾಮಾವಳಿ ಶೈಲಿಯ ರಚನೆ. ಪ್ರತಿ ಸಾಲೂ ಎರಡು ಪ್ರಾಸಬದ್ಧ ಹೆಸರುಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿ “ನಾರಾಯಣ” ಎಂದು ಮುಗಿಯುತ್ತದೆ, ನಂತರ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಪಲ್ಲವಿಯನ್ನು ಹಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.

Known by its refrain “Narayana Narayana jaya Govinda Hare”, this hymn is a favourite of bhajan groups and of Carnatic concerts. It is a litany in the namavali style. Each line strings together two rhyming names and closes on “Narayana”, and everyone then sings the refrain.

ಸಾಲುಗಳು ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಬಾಲಲೀಲೆಗಳಿಂದ ರಾಮಾಯಣದ ಘಟನೆಗಳವರೆಗೆ ಹರಡಿವೆ: ಯಮುನೆಯ ದಡ, ಗೋವರ್ಧನ, ಕಂಸನ ಮಲ್ಲರು, ಅಹಲ್ಯೆ, ಸೇತುಬಂಧ, ರಾವಣವಧೆ. ಪ್ರತಿ ಸಾಲಿನ ಅರ್ಥದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಅದು ನೆನೆಯುವ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನೂ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಸೂಚಿಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

The lines range from Krishna’s childhood in Vraja to the events of the Ramayana: the banks of the Yamuna, Govardhana, Kamsa’s wrestlers, Ahalya, the bridge to Lanka, the fall of Ravana. With each line’s meaning we have noted the story it recalls.

• ಪಲ್ಲವಿ ನಾರಾಯಣನೇ, ನಾರಾಯಣನೇ, ಗೋವಿಂದನೇ, ಹರಿಯೇ, ನಿನಗೆ ಜಯವಾಗಲಿ. ನಾರಾಯಣನೇ, ನಾರಾಯಣನೇ, ಗೋಪಾಲನೇ, ಹರಿಯೇ, ನಿನಗೆ ಜಯವಾಗಲಿ. ಈ ಪಲ್ಲವಿಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿ ಸಾಲಿನ ನಂತರ ಹಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.

  You who are clad in yellow silk, treasure house of the gods’ welfare, O Narayana.

  You who wear a lovely string of gunja berries, who by your own power took on a human guise, O Narayana. The gunja string is the ornament of Krishna the cowherd boy.
• 6 ರಾಧೆಯ ಅಧರದ ಮಧುರತೆಯನ್ನು ಸವಿಯುವ ರಸಿಕನೇ, ಚಂದ್ರವಂಶದ ತಿಲಕನೇ, ನಾರಾಯಣನೇ. ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಯದುಕುಲ ಚಂದ್ರವಂಶದ ಶಾಖೆ.
  Connoisseur of the sweetness of Radha’s lips, ornament of the lunar dynasty, O Narayana. The Yadu clan into which Krishna was born is a branch of the lunar line.
• 7 ಮುರಳಿಯ ಗಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಆನಂದಿಸುವವನೇ, ವೇದಗಳು ಸ್ತುತಿಸುವ ಪಾದಗಳವನೇ, ನಾರಾಯಣನೇ. ಭೂಮಿಯೇ ಅವನ ಪಾದ ಎಂಬ ಪುರುಷಸೂಕ್ತದ ಕಲ್ಪನೆಯನ್ನೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವರು ಓದುತ್ತಾರೆ.
  You who delight in the music of the flute, whose feet the Vedas praise, O Narayana. Some also read here the Purusha Sukta’s image of the earth as his feet.
• 8 ಕಮಲಗಳನ್ನೇ ಆಭರಣವಾಗಿ ತೊಟ್ಟವನೇ, ಕಮಲದಂತೆ ಸುಂದರಿಯಾದ ರುಕ್ಮಿಣಿಯ ಪತಿಯೇ, ನಾರಾಯಣನೇ. ಇದು ದ್ವಾರಕೆಯ ಕೃಷ್ಣನನ್ನು ನೆನೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.
  You who wear lotuses as ornaments, beloved of lotus-like Rukmini, O Narayana. The line recalls Krishna of Dvaraka.

  You whose eyes are like lotus petals, the thread that sets the world in motion, O Narayana.

  Slayer of Agha and Baka, foe of Kamsa, Keshava, Krishna, Murari, O Narayana. The Bhagavata tells how the boy Krishna killed Agha, who came as a python, and Baka, who came as a crane.
• 12 ಚಿನ್ನದಂತೆ ಹೊಳೆಯುವ ಪೀತಾಂಬರಧಾರಿಯೇ, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿಯ ಪತಿಯೇ, ನನಗೆ ಅಭಯ ಕೊಡು, ನಾರಾಯಣನೇ.
  You whose yellow robe gleams like gold, husband of Lakshmi, grant me freedom from fear, O Narayana.
• 13 ದಶರಥ ಮಹಾರಾಜನ ಕುಮಾರನೇ, ರಾಕ್ಷಸರ ಮದವನ್ನು ಮುರಿದವನೇ, ನಾರಾಯಣನೇ. ಇಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರ ರಾಮನ ಕಡೆಗೆ ತಿರುಗುತ್ತದೆ.
  Prince, son of King Dasharatha, who crushed the pride of the demons, O Narayana. Here the hymn turns to Rama.
• 14 ಗೋವರ್ಧನ ಗಿರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆನಂದಿಸುವವನೇ, ಗೋಪಿಯರ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಕದ್ದವನೇ, ನಾರಾಯಣನೇ. ಇಂದ್ರನ ಮಳೆಯಿಂದ ಗೋಕುಲವನ್ನು ಕಾಪಾಡಲು ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಎತ್ತಿದ ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಗೋವರ್ಧನ.
  You who delight on the hill of Govardhana, stealer of the gopis’ hearts, O Narayana. Govardhana is the hill Krishna lifted to shelter Gokula from Indra’s rain.

  You who roam the banks of the Sarayu, wish-granting tree to good people and sages, O Narayana. Ayodhya on the Sarayu is Rama’s city.
• 16 ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರನ ಯಜ್ಞವನ್ನು ಕಾಪಾಡಿದವನೇ, ರಾಕ್ಷಸರ ಪ್ರಾಣ ತೆಗೆದ ಬಗೆಬಗೆಯ ಸಾಹಸಗಳ ಚರಿತೆಯವನೇ, ನಾರಾಯಣನೇ. ಬಾಲ ರಾಮ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣರು ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರನ ಯಜ್ಞವನ್ನು ಮಾರೀಚ ಸುಬಾಹುಗಳಿಂದ ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿದ ಕಥೆ ಇದು.
  Protector of Vishvamitra’s sacrifice, whose many deeds laid the demons low, O Narayana. It recalls the young Rama and Lakshmana guarding Vishvamitra’s rite against Maricha and Subahu.

  You whose feet bear the marks of the banner, the thunderbolt and the goad, who rejoice with Sita, daughter of the Earth, O Narayana.

  Rama who crushed Tataka, rich in the wealth of many virtues, O Narayana. Tataka was the first demon Rama killed when he went with Vishvamitra.
• 25 ಗೌತಮನ ಪತ್ನಿ ಅಹಲ್ಯೆಯಿಂದ ಪೂಜಿತನಾದವನೇ, ಕರುಣೆ ತುಂಬಿದ ನೋಟದವನೇ, ನಾರಾಯಣನೇ. ರಾಮನ ಪಾದಸ್ಪರ್ಶದಿಂದ ಅಹಲ್ಯೆ ಶಾಪದಿಂದ ಬಿಡುಗಡೆಯಾದ ಕಥೆ ಇದು.
  You who were worshipped by Ahalya, Gautama’s wife, whose glance is full of compassion, O Narayana. It recalls Ahalya freed from her curse at Rama’s touch.
• 26 ಸಂಭ್ರಮದಿಂದ ಸೀತೆಯನ್ನು ವರಿಸಿದವನೇ, ಸಾಕೇತ ನಗರದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಹರಿಸುವವನೇ, ನಾರಾಯಣನೇ. ಶಿವಧನುಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಮುರಿದು ಸೀತೆಯನ್ನು ಮದುವೆಯಾದ ಕಥೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅಯೋಧ್ಯೆಯ ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ಇದು ನೆನೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.
  You who joyfully won Sita, who dwell in the city of Saketa, O Narayana. It recalls the breaking of Shiva’s bow and the wedding, and Rama’s rule in Ayodhya.

ಈ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this hymn

The closing line of the hymn names Shankaracharya, and so it is popularly held to be his. Many, however, think this bhajan style belongs to a later period. Whoever wrote it, it is among the litanies most often sung in bhajan groups and concerts.

ರಚನೆ ಸರಳ: ಮೊದಲು ಎರಡು ಸಾಲಿನ ಪಲ್ಲವಿ, ನಂತರ 28 ಸಾಲುಗಳು. ಪ್ರತಿ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಾಸವಿರುವ ಎರಡು ಹೆಸರುಗಳು, ಕೊನೆಗೆ “ನಾರಾಯಣ”. ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಲೀಲೆಗಳ ಸಾಲುಗಳು (1 ರಿಂದ 12, 14, 20, 22, 27) ಮತ್ತು ರಾಮನ ಸಾಲುಗಳು (13, 15 ರಿಂದ 19, 21, 23 ರಿಂದ 26) ಒಂದರೊಳಗೊಂದು ಬೆರೆತಿವೆ. ಕೊನೆಯ ಸಾಲು ಪ್ರಹ್ಲಾದನನ್ನು ಕಾಪಾಡಿದ ನರಸಿಂಹನನ್ನು ನೆನೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.

The form is simple: a two-line refrain, then 28 lines. Each line has two rhyming names and ends on “Narayana”. Lines on Krishna (1 to 12, 14, 20, 22, 27) and on Rama (13, 15 to 19, 21, 23 to 26) are interwoven. The last line recalls Narasimha, the saviour of Prahlada.

We follow the Stotranidhi text. Two lines it prints in brackets are not in every edition, and we have left them out: “barhinibarhapida natanatakaphanikrida” after line 7, and the closing “bharatiyativarashankara namamrtamakhilantara”. That second line is the one naming Shankara and is the basis of the attribution. In line 14 we print “Govardhanagiriramana” as one word.

Some readings are unusual and editions differ: “mavara” in line 12 (husband of Ma, that is Lakshmi), “vishvamitramakhatra” and “vividhaparasucaritra” in line 16, and “natagunavividhadhanadhya” in line 24. In such places we give the gist of the line.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಈ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿ ಸಾಲೂ ಹೊಸ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ತೆರೆಯುತ್ತದೆ, ಆದರೆ ಪಲ್ಲವಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಬದಲಾಗದೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಡುಗೆಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ ಒಂದೇ ಸಾಲನ್ನು ಗುನುಗುವವರನ್ನು ನಾವೆಲ್ಲ ನೋಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ದಿನದ ಕೆಲಸ ಬದಲಾಗುತ್ತಲೇ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ, ನಡುವೆ ಮರಳಿ ಬರಲು ಒಂದು ಪರಿಚಿತ ಸಾಲು ಇದ್ದರೆ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ನೆಲೆ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ.

In this hymn each line opens a new story, while the refrain returns unchanged every time. We have all seen someone at work in a kitchen humming the same line over and over. The day’s tasks keep changing, and a familiar line to come back to between them gives the mind somewhere to rest.
