ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಇರಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಯಾರ ಜೊತೆ ಇರಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುದು ಮುಖ್ಯ.
ಈ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ದಿಟ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.
ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ವರಂ ಪರ್ವತದುರ್ಗೇಷು ಭ್ರಾನ್ತಂ ವನಚರೈಃ ಸಹ ।
ನ ಮೂರ್ಖಜನಸಮ್ಪರ್ಕಃ ಸುರೇನ್ದ್ರಭವನೇಷ್ವಪಿ ॥
ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
वरं पर्वतदुर्गेषु भ्रान्तं वनचरैः सह ।
न मूर्खजनसम्पर्कः सुरेन्द्रभवनेष्वपि ॥
ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)
varaṃ parvatadurgeṣu bhrāntaṃ vanacaraiḥ saha |
na mūrkhajanasamparkaḥ surendrabhavaneṣvapi ||
ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ವರಮ್ (वरम्, varam) = ಮೇಲು (better)
- ಪರ್ವತದುರ್ಗೇಷು (पर्वतदुर्गेषु, parvatadurgeṣu) = ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಕಡಿದಾದ ಜಾಗಗಳಲ್ಲಿ (in the fastnesses of mountains)
- ಭ್ರಾನ್ತಮ್ (भ्रान्तम्, bhrāntam) = ಅಲೆಯುವುದು (to wander)
- ವನಚರೈಃ ಸಹ (वनचरैः सह, vanacaraiḥ saha) = ಕಾಡಿನ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳ ಜೊತೆ (with the creatures of the forest)
- ನ ಮೂರ್ಖಜನಸಮ್ಪರ್ಕಃ (न मूर्खजनसम्पर्कः, na mūrkhajanasamparkaḥ) = ಮೂರ್ಖರ ಸಹವಾಸ ಬೇಡ (not the company of fools)
- ಸುರೇನ್ದ್ರಭವನೇಷು ಅಪಿ (सुरेन्द्रभवनेषु अपि, surendrabhavaneṣu api) = ಇಂದ್ರನ ಅರಮನೆಗಳಲ್ಲಾದರೂ (even in the palaces of Indra)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಕಾಡಿನ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳ ಜೊತೆ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಕಡಿದಾದ ಜಾಗಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲೆಯುವುದೇ ಮೇಲು. ಇಂದ್ರನ ಅರಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಾದರೂ ಮೂರ್ಖರ ಸಹವಾಸ ಬೇಡ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
Better to wander in the fastnesses of the mountains with the creatures of the forest than to keep the company of fools, even in the palaces of Indra.
ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita
ವರಂ ಎಂಬ ಪದದಿಂದ ಆರಂಭವಾಗುವ ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಬಗೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಅದು ಮೇಲು ಎಂಬ ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯನ್ನೇ ಅವು ಕಟ್ಟುತ್ತವೆ.
Verses beginning with varam form a type in Sanskrit. They are all built on the comparison that this is better than that.
ಸುರೇಂದ್ರಭವನ ಎಂದರೆ ಇಂದ್ರನ ಅರಮನೆ, ಅಂದರೆ ಎಲ್ಲ ಸುಖಗಳೂ ಇರುವ ಜಾಗ. ಒಂದು ಕಡೆ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಕಷ್ಟದ ಜಾಗ, ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಕಡೆ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸುಖದ ಜಾಗ. ಆ ಎರಡು ಕೊನೆಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
Surendra-bhavana is Indra’s palace, the place where every comfort is. On one side the hardest place, on the other the easiest, and between those two extremes the choice of the verse becomes clear.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಜೊತೆಗಿರುವವರು ನಮ್ಮ ಆಲೋಚನೆಯನ್ನು ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ರೂಪಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇದು ಹಳೆಯ ಮಾತಾದರೂ ಇಂದಿನ ಅಧ್ಯಯನಗಳೂ ಇದನ್ನೇ ಹೇಳುತ್ತವೆ.
The people around us slowly shape how we think. The saying is old, but present day studies point the same way.
ಆದರೆ ಮೂರ್ಖ ಎಂಬ ಪದವನ್ನು ಜಾಗರೂಕತೆಯಿಂದ ಓದಬೇಕು. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಅದು ಓದದವನಲ್ಲ, ಕಲಿಯಲು ಒಪ್ಪದವನು.
But the word fool needs a careful reading. Here it does not mean the unschooled but the one who refuses to learn.
