ಸಂಸಾರಕಟುವೃಕ್ಷಸ್ಯ: ಕಹಿ ಮರದ ಎರಡು ಸಿಹಿ ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳು

ಬದುಕನ್ನು ಸಿಹಿ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುವ ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಕಹಿ ಎಂದು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕವಾಗಿ ಕೇಳಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಇದು ಅಂಥ ಒಂದು ಶ್ಲೋಕ.

ಆ ಕಹಿ ಮರದಲ್ಲೂ ಎರಡು ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳು ಅಮೃತದಂತಿವೆ ಎಂದು ಅದು ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಸಂಸಾರಕಟುವೃಕ್ಷಸ್ಯ ದ್ವೇ ಫಲೇ ಹ್ಯಮೃತೋಪಮೇ ।
ಸುಭಾಷಿತರಸಾಸ್ವಾದಃ ಸಂಗತಿಃ ಸುಜನೇ ಜನೇ ॥

संसारकटुवृक्षस्य द्वे फले ह्यमृतोपमे ।
सुभाषितरसास्वादः संगतिः सुजने जने ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (English IAST)

saṃsārakaṭuvṛkṣasya dve phale hyamṛtopame |
subhāṣitarasāsvādaḥ saṃgatiḥ sujane jane ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಸಂಸಾರಕಟುವೃಕ್ಷಸ್ಯ (संसारकटुवृक्षस्य, saṃsārakaṭuvṛkṣasya) = ಸಂಸಾರ, ಅಂದರೆ ಲೌಕಿಕ ಬದುಕು, ಎಂಬ ಕಹಿ ಮರದ (of the bitter tree of worldly life)
ದ್ವೇ (द्वे, dve) = ಎರಡು (two)
ಫಲೇ (फले, phale) = ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳು (fruits)
ಹಿ (हि, hi) = ಖಂಡಿತವಾಗಿ (indeed)
ಅಮೃತೋಪಮೇ (अमृतोपमे, amṛtopame) = ಅಮೃತಕ್ಕೆ ಸಮನಾದವು (like nectar)
ಸುಭಾಷಿತರಸಾಸ್ವಾದಃ (सुभाषितरसास्वादः, subhāṣitarasāsvādaḥ) = ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ರಸದ ಸವಿ (tasting the flavour of fine sayings)
ಸಂಗತಿಃ (संगतिः, saṃgatiḥ) = ಒಡನಾಟ (company)
ಸುಜನೇ ಜನೇ (सुजने जने, sujane jane) = ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಮನುಷ್ಯನಲ್ಲಿ, ಅಂದರೆ ಸಜ್ಜನನ ಒಡನಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ (in a good person, that is, in his company)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಸಂಸಾರವೆಂಬ ಕಹಿ ಮರಕ್ಕೆ ಅಮೃತದಂಥ ಎರಡು ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳಿವೆ. ಒಂದು ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ರಸವನ್ನು ಸವಿಯುವುದು, ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಸಜ್ಜನರ ಒಡನಾಟ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

The bitter tree of worldly life bears two fruits like nectar: tasting the flavour of fine sayings, and the company of good people.

ಚಾಣಕ್ಯನ ಹೆಸರಿನ ನೀತಿಸಂಗ್ರಹಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೇ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಸಂಸಾರವಿಷವೃಕ್ಷಸ್ಯ ದ್ವೇ ಫಲೇಽಮೃತೋಪಮೇ, ಸುಭಾಷಿತಂ ಚ ಸುಸ್ವಾದು ಸಂಗತಿಃ ಸಜ್ಜನೇ ಜನೇ ಎಂಬ ಪಾಠದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಚಲಿತವಾಗಿದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಕಹಿ ಮರದ ಬದಲು ವಿಷದ ಮರ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿರುವುದು ಸುಭಾಷಿತರತ್ನಭಾಂಡಾಗಾರದ ಪಾಠ.

In the collections of maxims that carry Chanakya’s name, the same verse circulates in a slightly different form: samsaravishavrikshasya dve phale’mritopame, subhashitam cha susvadu sangatih sajjane jane. There the tree is poisonous rather than bitter. The text given here is that of the Subhashitaratnabhandagara.

ಎರಡನ್ನೂ ಒಂದೇ ಶ್ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಜೋಡಿಸಿರುವುದು ಅರ್ಥಪೂರ್ಣ. ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಮಾತು ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಮನುಷ್ಯರು ಅದನ್ನು ಬದುಕಿ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.

Pairing the two in one verse is meaningful. Good words are found in books, and good people show them lived.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಕಾಯಿಲೆ, ನಷ್ಟ, ದಣಿವು ಬದುಕಿನ ಕಹಿಯ ಭಾಗ. ಅದನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲವೆಂದು ನಟಿಸಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ.

Illness, loss and fatigue are part of life’s bitterness. There is no need to pretend they are not.

ಆದರೆ ಕಷ್ಟದ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ನಿಲ್ಲುವ ಒಬ್ಬ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತ, ನೆನಪಿಗೆ ಬರುವ ಒಂದು ಸಾಲು ಆ ಕಹಿಯನ್ನು ತಾಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಷ್ಟು ಸಿಹಿ ಕೊಡುತ್ತವೆ.

But one friend who stands by you on hard days, and one line that comes back to mind, give enough sweetness to bear that bitterness.
