ಸುಭಾಷಿತಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತು ಬಂದಾಗ ಬಹಳ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಮೊದಲು ನೆನಪಾಗುವ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಇದು.

ರತ್ನ ಎಂದರೆ ಯಾವುದು ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗೆ ಅದು ಕೊಡುವ ಉತ್ತರ ಸರಳ, ಆದರೆ ಮರೆಯಲಾಗದ್ದು.

ಪೃಥಿವ್ಯಾಂ ತ್ರೀಣಿ ರತ್ನಾನಿ ಜಲಮನ್ನಂ ಸುಭಾಷಿತಮ್ ।
ಮೂಢೈಃ ಪಾಷಾಣಖಣ್ಡೇಷು ರತ್ನಸಂಜ್ಞಾ ವಿಧೀಯತೇ ॥

पृथिव्यां त्रीणि रत्नानि जलमन्नं सुभाषितम् ।
मूढैः पाषाणखण्डेषु रत्नसंज्ञा विधीयते ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (English IAST)

pṛthivyāṃ trīṇi ratnāni jalamannaṃ subhāṣitam |

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಪೃಥಿವ್ಯಾಮ್ (पृथिव्याम्, pṛthivyām) = ಭೂಮಿಯಲ್ಲಿ (on earth)
ತ್ರೀಣಿ (त्रीणि, trīṇi) = ಮೂರು (three)
ರತ್ನಾನಿ (रत्नानि, ratnāni) = ರತ್ನಗಳು (gems)
ಜಲಮ್ (जलम्, jalam) = ನೀರು (water)
ಅನ್ನಮ್ (अन्नम्, annam) = ಅನ್ನ (food)
ಸುಭಾಷಿತಮ್ (सुभाषितम्, subhāṣitam) = ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (the fine saying)
ಮೂಢೈಃ (मूढैः, mūḍhaiḥ) = ಮೂಢರಿಂದ (by the foolish)
ಪಾಷಾಣಖಣ್ಡೇಷು (पाषाणखण्डेषु, pāṣāṇakhaṇḍeṣu) = ಕಲ್ಲಿನ ಚೂರುಗಳಿಗೆ (to bits of stone)
ರತ್ನಸಂಜ್ಞಾ (रत्नसंज्ञा, ratnasaṃjñā) = ರತ್ನ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು (the name of gem)
ವಿಧೀಯತೇ (विधीयते, vidhīyate) = ಕೊಡಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ (is given)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಭೂಮಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಇರುವುದು ಮೂರೇ ರತ್ನಗಳು: ನೀರು, ಅನ್ನ ಮತ್ತು ಸುಭಾಷಿತ. ಮೂಢರು ಮಾತ್ರ ಕಲ್ಲಿನ ಚೂರುಗಳಿಗೆ ರತ್ನ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

There are only three gems on earth: water, food and the fine saying. It is only the foolish who give the name of gem to bits of stone.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಚಾಣಕ್ಯನ ಹೆಸರಿನ ನೀತಿಸಂಗ್ರಹಗಳಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಪಾಠ ರತ್ನಸಂಜ್ಞಾ ವಿಧೀಯತೇ ಎಂದೇ ಇದೆ. ಕೆಲವು ಪಾಠಾಂತರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ರತ್ನಸಂಜ್ಞಾಽಭಿಧೀಯತೇ ಎಂದಿದೆ. ವಿಧೀಯತೇ ಎಂದರೆ ಕೊಡಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಅಭಿಧೀಯತೇ ಎಂದರೆ ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡರ ಭಾವವೂ ಒಂದೇ. ಈ ಪುಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುದ್ರಿತ ಪ್ರತಿಯ ಪಾಠವನ್ನೂ, ನಮ್ಮ ಪರಿಚಯ ಲೇಖನದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಭಿಧೀಯತೇ ಪಾಠವನ್ನೂ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

This verse also appears in the collections of maxims that carry Chanakya’s name, which end vidhiyate as well. Only some copies read abhidhiyate. Vidhiyate is is assigned and abhidhiyate is is called, and here the sense comes to the same thing. This page gives the printed reading, while our introductory essay gives abhidhiyate.

ಪಟ್ಟಿಯ ಕ್ರಮವೂ ಗಮನಾರ್ಹ. ಮೊದಲು ಜೀವ ಉಳಿಸುವ ನೀರು, ನಂತರ ದೇಹ ಪೋಷಿಸುವ ಅನ್ನ, ಆಮೇಲೆ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಪೋಷಿಸುವ ಮಾತು.

The order of the list is worth noticing. First water that keeps one alive, then food that nourishes the body, then words that nourish the mind.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಬರಗಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ, ಪ್ರವಾಹದಲ್ಲಿ, ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯ ಹಾಸಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿನ್ನ ಮತ್ತು ವಜ್ರಗಳ ಬೆಲೆ ಏನು ಎಂಬುದು ಬೇಗ ಅರ್ಥವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಆಗ ಬೇಕಾಗುವುದು ಶುದ್ಧ ನೀರು, ಹೊಟ್ಟೆ ತುಂಬ ಅನ್ನ ಮತ್ತು ಧೈರ್ಯ ತುಂಬುವ ಒಂದು ಮಾತು.

In a drought, a flood or a hospital bed, the worth of gold and diamonds becomes clear quickly. What one needs then is clean water, a full meal and a word that gives courage.

ನೀರನ್ನು ಪೋಲು ಮಾಡದಿರುವುದು, ಅನ್ನವನ್ನು ಚೆಲ್ಲದಿರುವುದು, ಮಾತನ್ನು ಹಗುರವಾಗಿ ಬಳಸದಿರುವುದು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕವನ್ನು ಬದುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಲಿಸುವ ಸರಳ ದಾರಿಗಳು.

Not wasting water, not throwing away food and not using words lightly are simple ways to live this verse.
