A baby knows the relish of song, an animal knows it, even a snake knows it. But whether Shankara himself knows the sweetness of literature, who can say.
About this subhashita
The printed Subhashitaratnabhandagara reads ganarasam phani, the relish of song. Some digital copies have it wrongly as nagarasam. Since the verse compares song with literature, ganarasam is right.
That a snake sways to the snake charmer’s pipe is a folk belief. Snakes have no ear opening and no eardrum, and through the inner ear they pick up low-frequency sound and ground vibration. The swaying follows the charmer’s moving pipe more than its tune. The poet uses the folk image.
Saying that even Shankara may not know it is hyperbole. The inner sense is that the relish of literature is not inborn but must be cultivated by reading and listening.

For life today
To relish literature one needs familiarity with the language, a sense of context, and patience. That is why good teachers read a poem aloud to show it.
There is no need to blame ourselves for a poem we did not understand at first reading. By this verse, it is not easy even for Shankara.
