ವಸಂತದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾವು ಚಿಗುರಿದಾಗಲೇ ಕೋಗಿಲೆಯ ಕೂಗು ಕೇಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಮತ್ತು ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಾವ್ಯಗಳೆರಡರಲ್ಲೂ ಪರಿಚಿತ ಚಿತ್ರ.

ಆ ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿ ಈ ಆರ್ಯಾ ಪದ್ಯ ಒಂದು ಗಂಭೀರ ಮಾತು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಅನುಭವವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಸಿಹಿಯಾದ ಮಾತು ಹುಟ್ಟುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಆಸ್ವಾದಿತದಯಿತಾಧರಸುಧಾರಸಸ್ಯೈವ ಸೂಕ್ತಯೋ ಮಧುರಾಃ ।
ಅಕಲಿತರಸಾಲಮುಕುಲೋ ನ ಕೋಕಿಲಃ ಕಲಮುದಞ್ಚಯತಿ ॥

आस्वादितदयिताधरसुधारसस्यैव सूक्तयो मधुराः ।
अकलितरसालमुकुलो न कोकिलः कलमुदञ्चयति ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಆಸ್ವಾದಿತದಯಿತಾಧರಸುಧಾರಸಸ್ಯ (आस्वादितदयिताधरसुधारसस्य, āsvāditadayitādharasudhārasasya) = ಪ್ರಿಯತಮೆಯ ತುಟಿಯ ಅಮೃತರಸವನ್ನು ಸವಿದವನ (of one who has tasted the nectar of the beloved’s lips)
ಏವ (एव, eva) = ಮಾತ್ರ (only)
ಸೂಕ್ತಯಃ (सूक्तयः, sūktayaḥ) = ಸೂಕ್ತಿಗಳು (fine sayings)
ಮಧುರಾಃ (मधुराः, madhurāḥ) = ಸಿಹಿಯಾಗಿರುತ್ತವೆ (are sweet)
ಅಕಲಿತರಸಾಲಮುಕುಲಃ (अकलितरसालमुकुलः, akalitarasālamukulaḥ) = ಮಾವಿನ ಮೊಗ್ಗನ್ನು ಸವಿಯದ (that has not tasted mango buds)
ನ (न, na) = ಇಲ್ಲ (not)
ಕೋಕಿಲಃ (कोकिलः, kokilaḥ) = ಕೋಗಿಲೆ (the cuckoo)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಪ್ರಿಯತಮೆಯ ತುಟಿಯ ಅಮೃತರಸವನ್ನು ಸವಿದವನ ಮಾತುಗಳು ಮಾತ್ರ ಸಿಹಿಯಾಗಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಮಾವಿನ ಮೊಗ್ಗನ್ನು ಸವಿಯದ ಕೋಗಿಲೆ ಇಂಪಾಗಿ ಹಾಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Only the words of one who has tasted the nectar of his beloved’s lips are sweet. A cuckoo that has not tasted the mango buds does not raise its sweet song.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಸುಭಾಷಿತರತ್ನಭಾಂಡಾಗಾರದ ಅಡಿಟಿಪ್ಪಣಿ ಕಲಂ ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ಮಧುರಂ ಎಂದೂ, ಉದಂಚಯತಿ ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ವದತಿ ಎಂದೂ ಅರ್ಥ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ.

The footnote in the Subhashitaratnabhandagara glosses kalam as madhuram, sweet, and udanchayati as vadati, utters.

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಶೃಂಗಾರದ ಅನುಭವ ಒಂದು ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ಮಾತ್ರ. ಕವಿಯ ಮಾತಿನ ಸಿಹಿ ಅವನ ಬದುಕಿನ ಅನುಭವದಿಂದ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಸಾರ. ಕೋಗಿಲೆಯ ಹೋಲಿಕೆ ಆ ಸಾರವನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಅರ್ಥವಾಗುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ.

The experience of love here is only an example. The essence of the verse is that the sweetness of a poet’s words comes from what he has lived. The cuckoo makes that essence plain to all.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ದುಃಖವನ್ನು ಅನುಭವಿಸಿದವನ ಸಾಂತ್ವನದ ಮಾತು ಬೇರೆಯೇ ತೂಕ ಹೊಂದಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದೇ ಕಾಯಿಲೆಯನ್ನು ಎದುರಿಸಿದವರು ಹೊಸ ರೋಗಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಧೈರ್ಯ ತುಂಬುವ ಬೆಂಬಲ ಗುಂಪುಗಳು ಹಲವರಿಗೆ ನೆರವಾಗುವುದು ಇದೇ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕೆ. ಅವು ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯ ಜೊತೆಗಿನ ಆಸರೆ, ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಗೆ ಬದಲಿಯಲ್ಲ.

Comfort from someone who has known grief carries a different weight. Support groups in which people who have lived through the same illness encourage new patients help many for this very reason. They sit alongside treatment rather than replace it.

ಬರೆಯುವ ಮೊದಲು ಬದುಕಬೇಕು, ನೋಡಬೇಕು, ಕೇಳಬೇಕು. ಓದಿನಿಂದ ಮಾತ್ರ ಬರುವ ಮಾತು ಹಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಟೊಳ್ಳಾಗಿ ಕೇಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

Before writing one must live, see and listen. Words that come only from reading often sound hollow.
