ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕಾವ್ಯವನ್ನು ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ ಓದುವುದರಿಂದ ಏನೇನು ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಅದು ಸಾಲಾಗಿ ಪಟ್ಟಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ.

धर्मार्थकाममोक्षेषु वैचक्षण्यं कलासु च ।
करोति कीर्तिं प्रीतिं च साधुकाव्यनिषेवणम् ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಧರ್ಮಾರ್ಥಕಾಮಮೋಕ್ಷೇಷು (धर्मार्थकाममोक्षेषु, dharmārthakāmamokṣeṣu) = ಧರ್ಮ, ಅರ್ಥ, ಕಾಮ, ಮೋಕ್ಷ ಇವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ (in dharma, wealth, desire and liberation)
ವೈಚಕ್ಷಣ್ಯಮ್ (वैचक्षण्यम्, vaicakṣaṇyam) = ಪ್ರವೀಣತೆ, ನಿಪುಣತೆ (skill and discernment)
ಕಲಾಸು ಚ (कलासु च, kalāsu ca) = ಕಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲೂ (and in the arts)
ಕರೋತಿ (करोति, karoti) = ಉಂಟುಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ (produces)
ಕೀರ್ತಿಮ್ (कीर्तिम्, kīrtim) = ಕೀರ್ತಿಯನ್ನು (fame)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕಾವ್ಯವನ್ನು ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ ಸೇವಿಸುವುದು ಧರ್ಮ, ಅರ್ಥ, ಕಾಮ, ಮೋಕ್ಷ ಎಂಬ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಪುರುಷಾರ್ಥಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ಕಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ಪ್ರವೀಣತೆಯನ್ನು ಉಂಟುಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಕೀರ್ತಿಯನ್ನೂ ಸಂತೋಷವನ್ನೂ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

The constant enjoyment of good poetry brings discernment in dharma, in wealth, in desire and in liberation, and in the arts as well. With that it brings both fame and delight.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ನಿಷೇವಣ ಎಂದರೆ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಓದುವುದಲ್ಲ, ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ ಸೇವಿಸುವುದು. ಸೇವೆಯ ಅರ್ಥವೂ ಅದರಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಅಭ್ಯಾಸವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಓದು ಎಂದು ಇದನ್ನು ಓದಬೇಕು.

Nishevana does not mean reading once but partaking steadily. The sense of service is in it too. It should be read as reading grown into a habit.

ಧರ್ಮ, ಅರ್ಥ, ಕಾಮ, ಮೋಕ್ಷ ಎಂಬ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಪುರುಷಾರ್ಥಗಳು ಭಾರತೀಯ ಚಿಂತನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬದುಕಿನ ಎಲ್ಲ ಗುರಿಗಳನ್ನೂ ಒಳಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತವೆ. ಕಾವ್ಯ ಈ ನಾಲ್ಕರಲ್ಲೂ ನೆರವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಹೇಳಿಕೆ.

The four purusharthas of dharma, wealth, desire and liberation cover the whole range of life’s aims in Indian thought. To say that poetry helps in all four is a large claim.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಕಥೆ, ಕವಿತೆ ಓದುವವರು ಬೇರೆಯವರ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ಅರ್ಥ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಅಧ್ಯಯನಗಳು ಸೂಚಿಸಿವೆ. ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿರುವ ವೈಚಕ್ಷಣ್ಯ ಬಹುಶಃ ಇದೇ.

Studies suggest that people who read stories and poems find it easier to understand what others are feeling. The discernment the verse speaks of is probably this.

ದಿನಕ್ಕೆ ಹತ್ತು ನಿಮಿಷ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದನ್ನು ಓದುವುದು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಬದಲಾವಣೆಯಲ್ಲ, ಆದರೆ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಲೆಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಅದು ಸೇರಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ.

Ten minutes a day of good reading is not a big change, but over the years it adds up.
