ಅಥ ವಾಭಿನಿವಿಷ್ಟಬುದ್ಧಿಷು: ಕಮಲದ ಕೊಳಕ್ಕೆ ಚಂದ್ರನ ಬೆಳಕು

ಕೇಳುವವರ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಮೊದಲೇ ತೀರ್ಮಾನ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಕೂತಿದ್ದರೆ, ನಾವು ಎಷ್ಟು ಚೊಕ್ಕವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿದರೂ ಆ ಮಾತು ಎಲ್ಲಿಗೂ ಮುಟ್ಟುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಮಾತಿನ ದೋಷವಲ್ಲ, ಕೇಳುವ ಜಾಗದ ಸ್ಥಿತಿ.

ಆ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಗೆ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಒಂದು ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ. ವಿಯೋಗಿನೀ ವೃತ್ತದ ಕೊನೆಯ ಎರಡು ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸೂರ್ಯನನ್ನೇ ಒಲಿದ ಕಮಲಗಳ ಕೊಳ ಬಂದು ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ.

ಅಥ ವಾಭಿನಿವಿಷ್ಟಬುದ್ಧಿಷು
ವ್ರಜತಿ ವ್ಯರ್ಥಕತಾಂ ಸುಭಾಷಿತಮ್ ।
ರವಿರಾಗಿಷು ಶೀತರೋಚಿಷಃ
ಕರಜಾಲಂ ಕಮಲಾಕರೇಷ್ವಿವ ॥

अथ वाभिनिविष्टबुद्धिषु
व्रजति व्यर्थकतां सुभाषितम् ।
रविरागिषु शीतरोचिषः
करजालं कमलाकरेष्विव ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

vrajati vyarthakatāṃ subhāṣitam |

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಅಥ ವಾ (अथ वा, atha vā) = ಅಥವಾ (or again)
ಅಭಿನಿವಿಷ್ಟಬುದ್ಧಿಷು (अभिनिविष्टबुद्धिषु, abhiniviṣṭabuddhiṣu) = ಮೊದಲೇ ಒಂದು ನಿಲುವಿಗೆ ಅಂಟಿಕೊಂಡ ಬುದ್ಧಿಯವರಲ್ಲಿ (among those whose minds are set fast)
ವ್ರಜತಿ (व्रजति, vrajati) = ಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ (goes)
ವ್ಯರ್ಥಕತಾಮ್ (व्यर्थकताम्, vyarthakatām) = ವ್ಯರ್ಥತೆಗೆ (to uselessness)
ಸುಭಾಷಿತಮ್ (सुभाषितम्, subhāṣitam) = ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಮಾತು (a well spoken word)
ರವಿರಾಗಿಷು (रविरागिषु, ravirāgiṣu) = ಸೂರ್ಯನನ್ನೇ ಒಲಿದವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ (over those that love the sun)
ಶೀತರೋಚಿಷಃ (शीतरोचिषः, śītarociṣaḥ) = ತಂಪು ಕಿರಣದವನ, ಎಂದರೆ ಚಂದ್ರನ (of the cool rayed one, the moon)
ಕರಜಾಲಮ್ (करजालम्, karajālam) = ಕಿರಣಗಳ ಬಲೆ (the net of rays)
ಕಮಲಾಕರೇಷು (कमलाकरेषु, kamalākareṣu) = ಕಮಲಗಳ ಕೊಳಗಳಲ್ಲಿ (over the lotus ponds)
ಇವ (इव, iva) = ಹಾಗೆ (as)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಅಥವಾ, ಮೊದಲೇ ಒಂದು ನಿಲುವಿಗೆ ಅಂಟಿಕೊಂಡ ಬುದ್ಧಿಯವರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಮಾತು ವ್ಯರ್ಥವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಸೂರ್ಯನನ್ನೇ ಒಲಿದ ಕಮಲಗಳ ಕೊಳಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತಂಪು ಕಿರಣದ ಚಂದ್ರನ ಬೆಳಕಿನ ಬಲೆ ವ್ಯರ್ಥವಾಗುವಂತೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Or again, among those whose minds are already set fast, a well spoken word goes to waste, as the net of rays of the cool rayed moon goes to waste over ponds of lotuses that love only the sun.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಕರ ಎಂದರೆ ಕೈ ಮತ್ತು ಕಿರಣ ಎರಡೂ. ಕಿರಣಗಳನ್ನು ಜಾಲ ಎಂದರೆ ಬಲೆ ಎಂದು ಕರೆದಿರುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಚಂದ್ರ ಕೊಳದ ಮೇಲೆ ಬೆಳಕನ್ನು ಬೀಸಿ ಹಾಕಿದ ಚಿತ್ರ ಇದೆ. ಬಲೆ ಬಿದ್ದಿದೆ, ಆದರೆ ಏನೂ ಸಿಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

Kara means both hand and ray. Calling the rays a jala, a net, gives the picture of the moon casting light over the pond like a net. The net falls, and nothing comes of it.

ಕಮಲ ಹಗಲಿನ ಹೂವು. ಸೂರ್ಯ ಮೂಡಿದಾಗ ಅರಳಿ ಚಂದ್ರ ಬಂದಾಗ ಮುಚ್ಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಚಂದ್ರನ ಬೆಳಕಿಗೆ ಅರಳುವುದು ಕುಮುದ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಬೆಳಕು ಕಡಿಮೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಆರೋಪವಲ್ಲ. ಕೊಳ ಬೇರೆ ಎಂಬುದಷ್ಟೇ.

The kamala is a day lotus. It opens when the sun rises and shuts when the moon comes up. The flower that opens to moonlight is the kumuda. So the complaint here is not that the light is weak. It is only that the pond is the wrong one.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬೇರೆಯವರಿಂದ ಒಂದು ತೀರ್ಮಾನವನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದವರಿಗೆ ವಿವರಿಸುವಾಗ ಇದು ನೆನಪಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅವರ ನಿಲುವು ಮೊದಲೇ ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರೆ, ಇನ್ನೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ವಿವರಗಳನ್ನು ಸುರಿಯುವುದರಿಂದ ಏನೂ ಆಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

Anyone explaining a treatment to a patient who arrived with a verdict already in hand will recognise this. If the position is already hardened, pouring in more detail changes nothing.

ಆದರೆ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಮಾತು ತಪ್ಪು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಆ ಜಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯರ್ಥ ಎಂದಷ್ಟೇ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಅದೇ ಮಾತು ಬೇರೊಂದು ಹೊತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ, ಬೇರೊಬ್ಬರ ಮುಂದೆ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಬಹುದು.

The verse does not say the word is wrong. It says only that it is wasted there. The same word may work at another time, before someone else.
