ಹೂವನ್ನು ಕಿತ್ತು ಕಿವಿಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಹಳೆಯ ಅಲಂಕಾರದ ಪದ್ಧತಿ.

ಈ ವಸಂತತಿಲಕಾ ಪದ್ಯ ಮಾತನ್ನೇ ಬಳ್ಳಿಯಾಗಿ, ಸುಭಾಷಿತವನ್ನು ಅದರ ಹೂವಾಗಿ, ಕೇಳುವವರ ಕಿವಿಯನ್ನು ಅದನ್ನು ತೊಡುವ ಜಾಗವಾಗಿ ಕಲ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಧನ್ಯಾಃ ಶುಚೀನಿ ಸುರಭೀಣಿ ಗುಣೋಮ್ಭಿತಾನಿ
ವಾಗ್ವೀರುಧಃ ಸ್ವವದನೋಪವನೋದ್ಗತಾಯಾಃ ।
ಉಚ್ಚಿತ್ಯ ಸೂಕ್ತಿಕುಸುಮಾನಿ ಸತಾಂ ವಿವಿಕ್ತ-
ವರ್ಣಾನಿ ಕರ್ಣಪುಲಿನೇಷ್ವವತಂಸಯನ್ತಿ ॥

धन्याः शुचीनि सुरभीणि गुणोम्भितानि
वाग्वीरुधः स्ववदनोपवनोद्गतायाः ।
उच्चित्य सूक्तिकुसुमानि सतां विविक्त-
वर्णानि कर्णपुलिनेष्ववतंसयन्ति ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಧನ್ಯಾಃ (धन्याः, dhanyāḥ) = ಧನ್ಯರು, ಪುಣ್ಯವಂತರು (blessed are they)
ಶುಚೀನಿ (शुचीनि, śucīni) = ಶುದ್ಧವಾದ (pure)
ಸುರಭೀಣಿ (सुरभीणि, surabhīṇi) = ಸುಗಂಧಭರಿತವಾದ (fragrant)
ಗುಣೋಮ್ಭಿತಾನಿ (गुणोम्भितानि, guṇombhitāni) = ದಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪೋಣಿಸಿದ, ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಅರ್ಥದಲ್ಲಿ ಗುಣಗಳಿಂದ ಹೆಣೆದ (strung on thread; woven with virtues)
ವಾಗ್ವೀರುಧಃ (वाग्वीरुधः, vāgvīrudhaḥ) = ಮಾತೆಂಬ ಬಳ್ಳಿಯಿಂದ (from the creeper of speech)
ಸ್ವವದನೋಪವನೋದ್ಗತಾಯಾಃ (स्ववदनोपवनोद्गतायाः, svavadanopavanodgatāyāḥ) = ತಮ್ಮ ಬಾಯೆಂಬ ಉದ್ಯಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆದ (grown in the garden of their own mouth)
ಉಚ್ಚಿತ್ಯ (उच्चित्य, uccitya) = ಕಿತ್ತು (having plucked)
ಸೂಕ್ತಿಕುಸುಮಾನಿ (सूक्तिकुसुमानि, sūktikusumāni) = ಸೂಕ್ತಿಗಳೆಂಬ ಹೂವುಗಳನ್ನು (the flowers that fine sayings are)
ಸತಾಮ್ (सताम्, satām) = ಸಜ್ಜನರ (of good people)
ವಿವಿಕ್ತವರ್ಣಾನಿ (विविक्तवर्णानि, viviktavarṇāni) = ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟ ಬಣ್ಣಗಳುಳ್ಳ, ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಅರ್ಥದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟ ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳುಳ್ಳ (of distinct colours; of distinct syllables)
ಕರ್ಣಪುಲಿನೇಷು (कर्णपुलिनेषु, karṇapulineṣu) = ಕಿವಿಯ ಅಂಚುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ (on the rims of the ears)
ಅವತಂಸಯನ್ತಿ (अवतंसयन्ति, avataṃsayanti) = ಕಿವಿಯ ಆಭರಣವಾಗಿ ತೊಡಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ (set as ear ornaments)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ತಮ್ಮ ಬಾಯೆಂಬ ಉದ್ಯಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ಮಾತಿನ ಬಳ್ಳಿಯಿಂದ, ಶುದ್ಧವಾದ, ಸುಗಂಧಭರಿತವಾದ, ಗುಣವೆಂಬ ದಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪೋಣಿಸಿದ, ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟ ವರ್ಣಗಳುಳ್ಳ ಸೂಕ್ತಿಗಳೆಂಬ ಹೂವುಗಳನ್ನು ಕಿತ್ತು, ಸಜ್ಜನರ ಕಿವಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಆಭರಣವಾಗಿ ತೊಡಿಸುವವರು ಧನ್ಯರು.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Blessed are they who pluck, from the creeper of speech grown in the garden of their own mouth, the flowers of fine sayings, pure, fragrant, strung on the thread of virtue and clear in colour, and set them as ornaments on the ears of good people.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಗುಣ ಎಂದರೆ ದಾರ, ಗುಣ ಎಂದರೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಗುಣ. ವರ್ಣ ಎಂದರೆ ಬಣ್ಣ, ವರ್ಣ ಎಂದರೆ ಅಕ್ಷರ. ಹೂವಿನ ಪಕ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ದಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪೋಣಿಸಿದ ಬಣ್ಣದ ಹೂಗಳು, ಮಾತಿನ ಪಕ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಗುಣಗಳಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟ ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳ ಸೂಕ್ತಿಗಳು.

Guna means thread and guna means virtue. Varna means colour and varna means syllable. For flowers: coloured blossoms strung on thread. For speech: sayings of clear syllables, full of merit.

ಸುಭಾಷಿತರತ್ನಭಾಂಡಾಗಾರದ ಅಡಿಟಿಪ್ಪಣಿ ಅವತಂಸ ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ಕರ್ಣಭೂಷಣ ಎಂದು ಅರ್ಥ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಪುಲಿನ ಎಂದರೆ ನದಿಯ ಮರಳದಂಡೆ. ಕಿವಿಯ ಹೊರ ಅಂಚನ್ನು ಕವಿ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಲಿಸಿದ್ದಾನೆ.

The footnote in the Subhashitaratnabhandagara glosses avatamsa as an ear ornament. Pulina is a river’s sandbank, and the poet likens the outer rim of the ear to it.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಹೂವನ್ನು ಕೀಳುವುದು ನಮ್ಮ ತೋಟದಿಂದ, ಮುಡಿಸುವುದು ಬೇರೆಯವರ ಕಿವಿಗೆ. ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಮಾತಿನ ಉದ್ದೇಶ ಕೇಳುವವರನ್ನು ಅಲಂಕರಿಸುವುದೇ ಹೊರತು ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಮೆರೆಸುವುದಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬ ಸೂಚನೆ ಇದರಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

The flower is plucked from our own garden and set on another’s ear. There is a hint here that good speech is meant to adorn the listener, not to show ourselves off.

ಶುದ್ಧ, ಸುಗಂಧ, ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟ. ಮಾತನಾಡುವ ಮುನ್ನ ನಮ್ಮ ಮಾತಿಗೆ ಈ ಮೂರು ಗುಣಗಳಿವೆಯೇ ಎಂದು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬಹುದು.
