ಇಹ ತುರಗಶತೈಃ ಪ್ರಯಾಂತು ಮೂಢಾ: ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ತುದಿಯ ಕಾಗೆ

ಎತ್ತರದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂತವನೆಲ್ಲ ದೊಡ್ಡವನೆ? ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗೆ ಒಂದು ಚಿತ್ರದಿಂದ ಉತ್ತರ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ತುದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂತ ಕಾಗೆಗಳ ಸಾಲು, ನದಿಯ ಮರಳಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತ ಹಂಸಗಳು. ಎತ್ತರ ಯಾರದು, ಹಿರಿಮೆ ಯಾರದು?

ಇಹ ತುರಗಶತೈಃ ಪ್ರಯಾನ್ತು ಮೂಢಾ
ಧನರಹಿತಾಸ್ತು ಬುಧಾಃ ಪ್ರಯಾನ್ತು ಪದ್ಭ್ಯಾಮ್ ।
ಗಿರಿಶಿಖರಗತಾಪಿ ಕಾಕಪಙ್ಕ್ತಿಃ
ಪುಲಿನಗತೈರ್ನ ಸಮತ್ವಮೇತಿ ಹಂಸೈಃ ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)

इह तुरगशतैः प्रयान्तु मूढा
धनरहितास्तु बुधाः प्रयान्तु पद्भ्याम् ।
गिरिशिखरगतापि काकपङ्क्तिः
पुलिनगतैर्न समत्वमेति हंसैः ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

iha turagaśataiḥ prayāntu mūḍhā
dhanarahitāstu budhāḥ prayāntu padbhyām |
giriśikharagatāpi kākapaṅktiḥ
pulinagatairna samatvameti haṃsaiḥ ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಇಹ (इह, iha) = ಇಲ್ಲಿ (here)
ತುರಗಶತೈಃ ಪ್ರಯಾನ್ತು ಮೂಢಾಃ (तुरगशतैः प्रयान्तु मूढाः, turagaśataiḥ prayāntu mūḍhāḥ) = ಮೂಢರು ನೂರಾರು ಕುದುರೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೋಗಲಿ (let the foolish ride out with hundreds of horses)
ಧನರಹಿತಾಃ ತು ಬುಧಾಃ (धनरहिताः तु बुधाः, dhanarahitāḥ tu budhāḥ) = ಹಣವಿಲ್ಲದ ತಿಳಿದವರು (and the wise, who have no money)
ಪ್ರಯಾನ್ತು ಪದ್ಭ್ಯಾಮ್ (प्रयान्तु पद्भ्याम्, prayāntu padbhyām) = ಕಾಲುನಡಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೋಗಲಿ (let them go on foot)
ಗಿರಿಶಿಖರಗತಾ ಅಪಿ (गिरिशिखरगता अपि, giriśikharagatā api) = ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ತುದಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೂ (though it sits on a mountain peak)
ಕಾಕಪಙ್ಕ್ತಿಃ (काकपङ्क्तिः, kākapaṅktiḥ) = ಕಾಗೆಗಳ ಸಾಲು (a row of crows)
ಪುಲಿನಗತೈಃ (पुलिनगतैः, pulinagataiḥ) = ಮರಳಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತ (standing on the sandbank)
ನ ಸಮತ್ವಮ್ ಏತಿ ಹಂಸೈಃ (न समत्वम् एति हंसैः, na samatvam eti haṃsaiḥ) = ಹಂಸಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಮವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (does not become the equal of swans)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಮೂಢರು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನೂರಾರು ಕುದುರೆಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಹೋಗಲಿ, ಹಣವಿಲ್ಲದ ತಿಳಿದವರು ಕಾಲುನಡಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೋಗಲಿ. ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ತುದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂತ ಕಾಗೆಗಳ ಸಾಲು, ನದಿಯ ಮರಳಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತ ಹಂಸಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಮವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Here let the foolish ride out with a hundred horses and the wise, who have no money, go on foot. A row of crows, though it sits on a mountain peak, does not become the equal of swans standing on a sandbank.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಛಂದಸ್ಸು ಪುಷ್ಪಿತಾಗ್ರಾ. ಬೆಸ ಪಾದಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹನ್ನೆರಡು ಅಕ್ಷರ, ಸಮ ಪಾದಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹದಿಮೂರು. ಆ ಅಸಮ ಜೋಡಿಯೇ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದು ಬಗೆಯ ನಡಿಗೆ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ.

The metre here is pushpitagra: twelve syllables in the odd quarters and thirteen in the even. That uneven pairing gives it a gait of its own.

ಹಂಸ ಮತ್ತು ಕಾಗೆಯ ಹೋಲಿಕೆ ಈ ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಪದೇ ಪದೇ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಸಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂತ ಮೂರ್ಖನನ್ನು ಹಂಸಗಳ ನಡುವಿನ ಬಕಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಲಿಸುವ ಶ್ಲೋಕವೂ ಮುಂದೆ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ.

The comparison of swan and crow recurs in this part of the book. A later verse compares a fool in an assembly to a heron among swans.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಸ್ಥಾನ, ಕಾರು, ಕಚೇರಿ ಇವು ಎತ್ತರವನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತವೆ, ಗುಣವನ್ನಲ್ಲ. ಈ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸ ಮರೆತಾಗ ತಪ್ಪು ತೀರ್ಮಾನಗಳಾಗುತ್ತವೆ.

Position, a car and an office show height, not worth. Forgetting the difference leads to wrong judgements.

ಆದರೆ ಇದನ್ನು ಹಣವಂತರೆಲ್ಲ ಮೂಢರು ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥದಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಬಾರದು. ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ಎತ್ತರ ಮತ್ತು ಹಿರಿಮೆ ಒಂದೇ ಅಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ.

But it should not be read as saying that all who have money are fools. The verse says only that height and greatness are not the same thing.
