Of these five verses, the first four speak of Shanmukha’s peacock and his power. The first verse has the fancy that the peacock took him for a rain cloud and made its home close by.
The fifth verse is the main prayer. It remembers the smiling Shanmukha with joy in the heart.

The peacock saw him dwelling on the lap of a hill ringed with creepers of lightning. Taking him for a cloud that guards the worshippers, scorched by worldly heat, with the water of boundless compassion and brings them prosperity, it gladly made its home near him.
In him who is Subrahmanya through the power of knowledge, the generalship of the divine army is established. Bearing the Shakti in this way, Subrahmanya shows his generalship.
This peacock makes everyone think that its right wing is beyond description. Its right wing is not fit to be described.
Whoever goes resorting to the indescribable wing sees Brahman, higher than the highest, spotless, the supreme light named Subrahmanya.
We gladly remember in the heart Shanmukha, the smiling one, who sports in an ocean of happiness. Foremost sages always serve his lotus feet. He destroys the host of enemies beginning with desire, is an ocean of grace, and is a wishing tree to those who take refuge.
About this hymn
This is a hymn from the Subrahmanya group on the website of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham. The source names no author, so we name none. We give no date either. The source places it at Kunnakkudi.
The first four verses concern the peacock and Shanmukha’s power. They combine wordplay with a hint of doctrine. The fourth, in the Advaita manner, calls Brahman itself Subrahmanya. The fifth verse is the main prayer.
The text of the first four verses may be partly garbled. For example bhavappitta-plushta in verse 1 and the first line of verse 2 are unclear, so we give only the gist. Verse 3 too is a gist. The word paksha can mean a wing or a side.

For life today
Remember a small hill temple that we visit once a year. The path is the same and the steps are the same, yet each year we climb with a different mind.
The picture of the peacock nesting by Shanmukha’s hill gives a similar feeling of nearness. Like it, we too can settle the mind near a place we love.
