This is a hymn to Shanmukha, the six-faced Subrahmanya. Its seven verses describe his form, his grace and his peacock mount. Each verse from the second to the seventh closes with the line: I always meditate on Shanmukha in the lotus of the heart.
A closing verse gives the fruit of reciting. It says the hymn is composed in the bhujangaprayata metre, and it promises Shanmukha’s favour to those who recite it with devotion.

Embraced in body by Hri (modesty), Lakshmi, Valli and Devasena, riding the peacock, a sun to the lotus face of Shiva, six-faced, dwelling on the hill, he quickly awakens in himself this thought: let me make my home in the steadfast hearts of devotees.
His smile puts to shame the moon’s radiance and the jasmine flower. He is anointed with the scent of white camphor and the finest aloe wood. He is a wishing tree that grants the desires of all the worlds that take refuge in him. On that Shanmukha I always meditate in the lotus of my heart.
Born of the sense of I in the body, the senses and the rest, there are enemies: the six waves of hunger, thirst, sorrow, delusion, old age and death, and their changes. To destroy them for those who bow, he bears six lotus faces. On that Shanmukha I always meditate in the lotus of my heart.
Long ago he was born of Sthanu (Shiva) for the sake of the gods. Sthanu means a post, and it is a name of Shiva. The verse plays on it, as if the creeper called Aparna (Parvati) had embraced the post. On Vishakha, embraced on the hill by the creeper Valli, I always meditate in the lotus of my heart.
The darkness that the syllable gu stands for, outer and inner, he destroys by the radiance of his own body and by the gift of knowledge. On that Guha, who is known through the Upanishads alone, I always meditate in the lotus of my heart.
He carries with regard the peacock, which knows the path of rites proclaimed on earth to be the root cause of its own dance and which rejoices in the thunder of clouds. On that Shanmukha I always meditate in the lotus of my heart.
An ocean of compassion, he shines even today in restoring to life cocks and the like that have been thoroughly cooked, so as to make faith firm in people. On that Shanmukha I always meditate in the lotus of my heart.
Those who recite with devotion this hymn to Shanmukha, composed in the bhujangaprayata metre, he makes rich in good sons, long life, health and wealth. He also makes them foremost among the good and the learned, so the verse on the fruit declares.
About this hymn
This hymn is from the Subrahmanya group on the website of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham. The source marks it as belonging to the Kunnakkudi kshetra. It names no author, so we name none. We give no date either.
The structure is as follows. The first verse introduces Shanmukha. In verses two to seven one refrain line returns. The eighth is the verse on the fruit, and it carries no number.
The grammar of verse six is compressed. We have taken it to point to a chain: the path of rites brings rain, and rain brings the peacock’s dance. The mention of the cocks in verse seven seems to belong to the tradition of the place, and our source gives no detail of it.
The first line of the verse on the fruit has the form klptam, which looks like an unusual way of writing kliptam. The sense is simply composed. This verse mentions health. Prayer and chanting do not replace medical treatment.
· Source: the stotra section of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham website (sringeri.net). Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
For life today
Picture a peacock opening its fan on a wet lawn after the rain has stopped. Behind that beauty lies a whole chain of cloud, thunder and downpour. We tend to enjoy only what meets the eye.
Verse six notices exactly this. The Lord knows the causes behind the peacock’s dance and carries it with regard. Behind our own small joys too there are many unseen causes. To recall them once is a way to gratitude.
