ಆದಿ ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರನ್ನು ನಮಿಸುವ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಇದು. ಶಂಕರ ಜಯಂತಿಯಂದು, ಅದ್ವೈತ ಮಠಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ವೇದಾಂತ ಪಾಠದ ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಕೇಳಿಬರುತ್ತದೆ.
ಶಂ ಎಂದರೆ ಮಂಗಳ, ಕರ ಎಂದರೆ ಮಾಡುವವನು. ಶಂಕರ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರನ್ನೇ ಬಿಡಿಸಿ, ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಮಂಗಳ ಮಾಡಿದವರು ಎಂದು ಕೊನೆಯ ಸಾಲು ಸೊಗಸಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

ಶ್ರುತಿಸ್ಮೃತಿಪುರಾಣಾನಾಮಾಲಯಂ ಕರುಣಾಲಯಮ್ ।
ನಮಾಮಿ ಭಗವತ್ಪಾದಂ ಶಂಕರಂ ಲೋಕಶಂಕರಮ್ ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಶ್ರುತಿಸ್ಮೃತಿಪುರಾಣಾನಾಮ್ (श्रुतिस्मृतिपुराणानाम्, śrutismṛtipurāṇānām) = ವೇದ, ಸ್ಮೃತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪುರಾಣಗಳ (of the Vedas, the Smritis and the Puranas)
- ಆಲಯಮ್ (आलयम्, ālayam) = ನೆಲೆಯಾದವರನ್ನು (the abode)
- ಕರುಣಾಲಯಮ್ (करुणालयम्, karuṇālayam) = ಕರುಣೆಯ ಮನೆಯಾದವರನ್ನು (the home of compassion)
- ನಮಾಮಿ (नमामि, namāmi) = ನಮಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ (I bow)
- ಭಗವತ್ಪಾದಮ್ (भगवत्पादम्, bhagavatpādam) = ಪೂಜ್ಯರಾದ ಭಗವತ್ಪಾದರನ್ನು (the revered Bhagavatpada)
- ಶಂಕರಮ್ (शङ्करम्, śaṅkaram) = ಶಂಕರರನ್ನು (Shankara)
- ಲೋಕಶಂಕರಮ್ (लोकशङ्करम्, lokaśaṅkaram) = ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಮಂಗಳ ಮಾಡಿದವರನ್ನು (who brings good to the world)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ವೇದ, ಸ್ಮೃತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪುರಾಣಗಳಿಗೆ ನೆಲೆಯಾದ, ಕರುಣೆಯ ಮನೆಯಾದ, ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಮಂಗಳ ಮಾಡಿದ ಭಗವತ್ಪಾದ ಶಂಕರರಿಗೆ ನಾನು ನಮಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
I bow to the revered Shankara Bhagavatpada, abode of the Vedas, Smritis and Puranas, home of compassion, who brings good to the world.
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this verse
ಭಗವತ್ಪಾದ ಎಂಬುದು ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರಿಗೆ ಪರಂಪರೆ ಕೊಡುವ ಗೌರವದ ಬಿರುದು. ಅದ್ವೈತ ಗ್ರಂಥಗಳ ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಗಳ ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆಗಾಗ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದರ ಕರ್ತೃ ಯಾರು ಎಂಬುದು ಖಚಿತವಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿದಿಲ್ಲ.
Bhagavatpada is the title of honour tradition gives Shankaracharya. The verse often appears at the start of commentaries on Advaita works. Its author is not known for certain.
ಶಂಕರ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿನ ಅರ್ಥವೇ ಮಂಗಳ ಮಾಡುವವನು. ಶಂಕರಂ ಲೋಕಶಂಕರಂ ಎಂಬ ಪದಜೋಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಸರು ಮತ್ತು ಗುಣ ಒಂದಾಗಿವೆ.
The name Shankara itself means one who does good. In the pair shankaram lokashankaram, name and nature become one.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ದೊಡ್ಡ ಗ್ರಂಥಗಳ ನೆಲೆಯಾದವರು ಎಂದ ತಕ್ಷಣ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಕರುಣೆಯ ಮನೆ ಎಂಬ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ವಿದ್ಯೆ ಕರುಣೆಯ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ನಡೆದಾಗಲೇ ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಮಂಗಳ ಎಂಬ ಸರಳ ಪಾಠ ಅದರಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ತರಗತಿಯ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರಿಗೂ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯ ವೈದ್ಯರಿಗೂ ಅದು ಒಂದೇ ರೀತಿ ಅನ್ವಯಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
No sooner does the verse call him the abode of great scriptures than it adds home of compassion. The simple lesson is that learning does good to the world only when it walks with compassion. It applies alike to a teacher in the classroom and a doctor in the hospital.
