About this verse
Anandatirtha is one of Madhvacharya’s monastic names, Purnaprajna being another. Tradition holds that he founded the Sri Krishna Matha at Udupi. The author of this verse is not known for certain.
Tapatraya means the three kinds of suffering: adhyatmika, from one’s own body and mind, adhibhautika, from other beings, and adhidaivika, from the forces of nature.
Sources: several. Where versions differ, we have noted it here.
For life today
The two words abhrama and ajada describe the marks of a fine teacher: a mind that thinks clearly and works with energy. In remembering the guru it is natural to hope that a little of those qualities grows in us too.
