ಮೂರ್ಖೋ ಹಿ ಜಲ್ಪತಾಂ ಪುಂಸಾಂ: ಕೆಟ್ಟದ್ದನ್ನೇ ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವವನು

ಪಂಡಿತಪ್ರಶಂಸಾ ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞನು ಹಂಸದಂತೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ ಎಂಬ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಬಂದಿತ್ತು.

ಇದು ಅದರ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಜೋಡಿ. ಅದೇ ಮೊದಲ ಸಾಲು, ಆದರೆ ಕೊನೆ ಬೇರೆ.

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಮೂರ್ಖೋ ಹಿ ಜಲ್ಪತಾಂ ಪುಂಸಾಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ವಾಚಃ ಶುಭಾಶುಭಾಃ ।
ಅಶುಭಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಾದತ್ತೇ ಪುರೀಷಮಿವ ಶೂಕರಃ ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)

मूर्खो हि जल्पतां पुंसां श्रुत्वा वाचः शुभाशुभाः ।
अशुभं वाक्यमादत्ते पुरीषमिव शूकरः ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

mūrkho hi jalpatāṃ puṃsāṃ śrutvā vācaḥ śubhāśubhāḥ |
aśubhaṃ vākyamādatte purīṣamiva śūkaraḥ ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಮೂರ್ಖಃ ಹಿ (मूर्खः हि, mūrkhaḥ hi) = ಮೂರ್ಖನಾದರೋ (the fool, on the other hand)
ಜಲ್ಪತಾಮ್ ಪುಂಸಾಮ್ (जल्पताम् पुंसाम्, jalpatām puṃsām) = ಮಾತನಾಡುವ ಜನರ (of the people who talk)
ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ವಾಚಃ ಶುಭಾಶುಭಾಃ (श्रुत्वा वाचः शुभाशुभाः, śrutvā vācaḥ śubhāśubhāḥ) = ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಮತ್ತು ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಮಾತುಗಳನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿ (having heard words both good and bad)
ಅಶುಭಮ್ ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ ಆದತ್ತೇ (अशुभम् वाक्यम् आदत्ते, aśubham vākyam ādatte) = ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಮಾತನ್ನೇ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ (takes up the bad one)
ಪುರೀಷಮ್ ಇವ ಶೂಕರಃ (पुरीषम् इव शूकरः, purīṣam iva śūkaraḥ) = ಹಂದಿ ಹೊಲಸನ್ನು ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಂತೆ (as a pig picks out filth)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಮಾತನಾಡುವ ಜನರ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಮತ್ತು ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಮಾತುಗಳನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿ, ಮೂರ್ಖನು ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಮಾತನ್ನೇ ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಹಂದಿ ಹೊಲಸನ್ನು ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಂತೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Having heard the words of those who talk, good and bad alike, the fool takes up the bad one, as a pig picks out filth.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಮತ್ತು ಹಂಸದ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಒಂದೇ ಸಾಲಿನಿಂದ ಆರಂಭವಾಗುತ್ತವೆ, ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಗಿಯುತ್ತವೆ. ಸಂಗ್ರಹದ ಈ ಜೋಡಣೆ ಉದ್ದೇಶಪೂರ್ವಕ.

This verse and the swan verse begin with the same line and end with different animals. The pairing in the collection is deliberate.

ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಸುಭಾಷಿತಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂಥ ಜೋಡಿಗಳು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ. ಒಂದೇ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶ, ಎರಡು ಬೇರೆ ಬಗೆಯ ಮನುಷ್ಯರು, ಎರಡು ಬೇರೆ ಫಲ.

Such pairs are common among Sanskrit subhashitas: one situation, two kinds of people, and two different outcomes.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಒಂದೇ ಸಭೆಯಿಂದ ಹೊರಬಂದ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ವಿಷಯ ನೆನಪಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಒಬ್ಬರಿಗೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಸಲಹೆ ನೆನಪಿರುತ್ತದೆ, ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರಿಗೆ ಯಾರೋ ಆಡಿದ ಒಂದು ಚುಚ್ಚು ಮಾತು.

Two people leaving the same meeting remember different things. One remembers a good suggestion; the other remembers a sharp remark.

ನೆನಪಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಏನನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುದು ಬಹುಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ನಮ್ಮದೇ ಆಯ್ಕೆ. ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಕಟುವಾದ ಹೋಲಿಕೆ ಆ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿಸಲೆಂದೇ ಇದೆ.

What we keep in memory is largely our own choice. The harsh comparison in this verse exists to make that choice visible.
