This Ganga went from heaven to Shiva’s head, from Pashupati’s head to the mountain, from the lofty mountain to the earth, and from the earth to the sea, lower and lower, step by step. Or rather, that is a small matter. For those who have fallen away from discernment the fall has a hundred mouths.
About this subhashita
The turn of the verse sits in the word shatamukha. The Ganga is traditionally said to reach the sea by a hundred mouths, the hundred channels of the delta. The same word becomes, for those without discernment, a hundred ways down. One word does both jobs.
The Ganga’s descent has an order to it. Four steps, one after another, and each step a place of honour. The fall of those who have lost discernment has neither that order nor those steps. The two words stokam athava push the comparison itself aside as too mild.

For life today
The second mistake, made to cover the first, is the first of the hundred mouths this verse speaks of. Anyone who has worked in a hospital has seen where a small correction to a record can lead.
That the descent happens in stages is also a consolation. At each step there is a chance to stop. The verse does not say so, but the picture it draws contains it.
