As nectar did not go below Rahu’s throat, a charming fine saying does not go past the throat of a wicked man. As Hari wears the spotless Kaustubha gem on his chest, the good man holds that same saying in his heart.
About this subhashita
When the nectar from the churning of the ocean was served, Rahu sat among the gods and drank. When the sun and moon pointed him out, Vishnu cut off his head, before the nectar could pass below his throat, as the Puranic story goes. The Kaustubha gem, born of the same churning, adorns Vishnu’s chest.
The footnote in the Subhashitaratnabhandagara glosses arkaripoh as rahoh, and maharatna as the Kaustubha gem. The beauty of the verse lies in pairing two things from the same ocean that bore different fruit in two beings.

For life today
Hearing good advice is one thing, taking it in is another. Not everyone who nods at a doctor’s advice follows it.
It is good to ask ourselves now and then whether some good word has stopped at our throat instead of going down, whether pride is holding it there.
