ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸರ ಸಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಳಿತು, ಮಾತನಾಡಬೇಕಾದ ಹೊತ್ತು ಬಂದಾಗಲೂ ಬಾಯಿ ತೆರೆಯದವನನ್ನು ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತ ಒಂದು ಚಿತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಡಿದಿಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ಯಸ್ಯ ವಕ್ತ್ರಕುಹರೇ ಸುಭಾಷಿತಂ
ನಾಸ್ತಿ ನಾಪ್ಯವಸರೇ ಪ್ರಜಲ್ಪತಿ ।
ಆಗತಃ ಸದಸಿ ಧೀಮತಾಮಸೌ
ಲೇಪ್ಯನಿರ್ಮಿತ ಇವಾವಭಾಸತೇ ॥

यस्य वक्त्रकुहरे सुभाषितं
नास्ति नाप्यवसरे प्रजल्पति ।
आगतः सदसि धीमतामसौ
लेप्यनिर्मित इवावभासते ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಯಸ್ಯ (यस्य, yasya) = ಯಾರ (whose)
ವಕ್ತ್ರಕುಹರೇ (वक्त्रकुहरे, vaktrakuhare) = ಬಾಯೆಂಬ ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲಿ (in the cave of the mouth)
ಸುಭಾಷಿತಮ್ (सुभाषितम्, subhāṣitam) = ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (a fine saying)
ನಾಸ್ತಿ (नास्ति, nāsti) = ಇಲ್ಲವೋ (is not)
ನ ಅಪಿ (न अपि, na api) = ಅಲ್ಲದೆ (nor)
ಅವಸರೇ (अवसरे, avasare) = ಸಮಯ ಬಂದಾಗ (when the moment comes)
ಪ್ರಜಲ್ಪತಿ (प्रजल्पति, prajalpati) = ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ (does he speak)
ಆಗತಃ (आगतः, āgataḥ) = ಬಂದವನಾಗಿ (having come)
ಸದಸಿ (सदसि, sadasi) = ಸಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿ (into the assembly)
ಧೀಮತಾಮ್ (धीमताम्, dhīmatām) = ಬುದ್ಧಿವಂತರ (of the wise)
ಅಸೌ (असौ, asau) = ಈತ (this man)
ಲೇಪ್ಯನಿರ್ಮಿತಃ (लेप्यनिर्मितः, lepyanirmitaḥ) = ಮಣ್ಣು ಅಥವಾ ಗಾರೆಯಿಂದ ಮಾಡಿದ (made of plaster or clay)
ಇವ (इव, iva) = ಹಾಗೆ (like)
ಅವಭಾಸತೇ (अवभासते, avabhāsate) = ಕಾಣುತ್ತಾನೆ (appears)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಯಾರ ಬಾಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಭಾಷಿತವಿಲ್ಲವೋ, ಸಮಯ ಬಂದಾಗಲೂ ಯಾರು ಮಾತನಾಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲವೋ, ಅಂಥವನು ಬುದ್ಧಿವಂತರ ಸಭೆಗೆ ಬಂದರೆ ಮಣ್ಣಿನಿಂದ ಮಾಡಿದ ಗೊಂಬೆಯಂತೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಾನೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

He in whose mouth there is no fine saying, and who does not speak even when the moment comes, looks like a figure made of clay when he comes into an assembly of the wise.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಸುಭಾಷಿತರತ್ನಭಾಂಡಾಗಾರದ ಅಡಿಟಿಪ್ಪಣಿ ಕುಹರ ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ಬಿಲ ಎಂದೂ, ಲೇಪ್ಯನಿರ್ಮಿತ ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ಪಂಕರಚಿತ, ಅಂದರೆ ಕೆಸರಿನಿಂದ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು ಎಂದೂ ಅರ್ಥ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ.

The footnote in the Subhashitaratnabhandagara glosses kuhara as bila, a hollow, and lepyanirmita as pankarachita, made of mud.

ರಥೋದ್ಧತಾ ಹನ್ನೊಂದು ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳ ಪಾದಗಳುಳ್ಳ ವೃತ್ತ. ಅದರ ಲಯ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಚುರುಕಾದದ್ದು. ಗೊಂಬೆಯ ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯ ವ್ಯಂಗ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಅದು ಹೊಂದುತ್ತದೆ.

Rathoddhata is a metre of eleven syllables to the line, with a brisk rhythm that suits the irony of the clay figure.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಮೌನ ಹಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ವಿವೇಕ. ಆದರೆ ತಪ್ಪು ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ, ರೋಗಿಯ ಹಿತಕ್ಕೆ ಅಪಾಯವಿರುವಾಗ ಮೌನವಾಗಿರುವುದು ವಿವೇಕವಲ್ಲ.

Silence is often wisdom. But when something wrong is happening, or when a patient’s welfare is at risk, staying silent is not wisdom.

ಸಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಲು ಹಿಂಜರಿಯುವವರು ಒಂದೆರಡು ಸರಳ ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಮೊದಲೇ ಸಿದ್ಧಪಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುವುದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ.

For those who hesitate to speak at meetings, preparing one or two simple sentences in advance is a good habit.
