“Bāgilanu teredu sēveyanu koḍu hariye” is one of the best loved songs of Kanakadasa. A devotee standing outside the door of the Lord asks Hari plainly: I have called and called, did you not hear my voice? The question carries the easy intimacy of a devotee who feels he has a claim on his God.

In three charanas Kanakadasa recalls the times Hari came running at a devotee’s cry: Gajendra, Prahlada, and Draupadi with Ajamila. The song closes with a question: for you, who love your devotees, is there such a thing as a right or wrong time? We give the text in Kannada with a plain meaning of each stanza in Kannada and English.

O Hari, open the door and grant me your darshan and the chance to serve you. O Narahari, I have called out to you, did you not hear my voice?
You were in your supreme abode, on the ocean of milk, lying on the serpent couch (Adishesha) with Lakshmi. Yet when Gajendra, king of elephants, in the grip of the crocodile, cried out “Ādimūla, O root of all”, you came that very moment to his aid, O Narahari.
The wicked Hiranyakashipu, in fierce anger, sword in hand, struck the pillar demanding, “Where is your master?” The child Prahlada went on worshipping you with unshaken devotion. Then, O Narahari, you burst forth from the pillar with a rush.
You gave an unending sari to Draupadi, queen of Yudhishthira, the son of Yama. At the right moment you rescued Ajamila. O lover of your devotees, lotus eyed Adikeshava of Kaginele, is there for you any right time or wrong time?

Kanakadasa (about 1509 to 1609) is one of the great poet singers of the Haridasa tradition. His songs are signed with the ankita “Kāginele Ādikēśava”, the deity Adikeshava of Kaginele in present day Haveri district. The dates of his life come down through tradition and are approximate.

Tradition holds that when Kanakadasa, kept outside the Krishna temple at Udupi, sang to the Lord, the image turned to face him and gave him darshan through a crack in the wall. That opening is still called “Kanakana Kiṇḍi”, Kanaka’s window. Many link this song to that story, but the link is a popular belief rather than a matter of record.

The song became a household song through the film Bhakta Kanakadasa (1960), where it is usually said to have been sung by P. B. Sreenivas. The film has more charanas. We print the three that are most often sung. The song has no single fixed raga, it varies from singer to singer.

The song has a two line pallavi and three charanas. We take the text from the Geetavihara section of kannadanudi.com and correct its misprints (samayāsamaya for samāyāsamaya, kamalākṣa for kamālākṣa, hariye for hariyē). In the pallavi we print “koḍu”, many singers sing “koḍo”.

For life today

At closing time a shop’s shutter is often half down. Sometimes the shopkeeper still stoops, calls in the person who has come running, and hands over what is needed. Kanakadasa’s question is of the same kind: does one who loves his devotees keep hours?

People come to us too, late and tired. The song brings to mind that small kindness of lifting a half closed door once more.
