“Indu enage Gōvinda ninna pādāravindava tōrō” is a Kannada song that tradition ascribes to Sri Raghavendra Tirtha of Mantralaya. A devotee caught in worldly life, hurt and unable to see the way ahead, begs Krishna to show him his feet this very day. Its beauty lies in the honesty with which he owns his failings without hiding them.
In three charanas the devotee describes his state: bound by worldly life, timid and weak in devotion, gone astray. At the end he surrenders: there is no one to protect me, I have come to you. We give the text in Kannada with a plain meaning of each stanza in Kannada and English.

O Govinda, O Mukunda, show me your lotus feet today. -
O fair faced one, son of Nandagopa, you who bore up Mount Mandara as the tortoise at the churning of the ocean, O bliss itself, beloved of Lakshmi.
Lord, I am in pain, caught in the bonds of worldly existence. Unable to see the road ahead, I have wasted away in this world. Think of me as your child, do not count my faults, protect me, O father, Krishna, father of Kama (the Puranas say Krishna’s son Pradyumna was Kama born again).
O Hari, in my foolishness I lived as a great coward and never practised firm devotion. I did not look upon you, I did not sing your glory. O charming Krishna, I beg of you.
On this earth I have lived a heavily burdened life (or, lived as a burden to the earth), walked off the path and fallen in with bad company. There is no one to protect me, Lord, I have come to you. O valiant Venugopala, O Hari, take me across to the far shore.
About this hymn
Sri Raghavendra Tirtha (1595 to 1671) was a monk of the Madhva tradition and the saint of Mantralaya. His works are mostly in Sanskrit, chiefly commentaries. This song, signed “Vēṇugōpāla”, is the best known Kannada song that comes down under his name. Tradition ascribes it to him, and Kannada Wikisource also gives it under his name.
The song became a household song through the voice of P. B. Sreenivas, in a rendering usually said to be from the film Sri Raghavendra Mahime. It is also popular in concerts. It has no single fixed raga, it varies from singer to singer.
We take the text from Kannada Wikisource, which prints the pallavi as two lines. Following the way it is usually sung, we give the second line as the anupallavi and print it with “mandarōddhara ānanda indirāramaṇa”. The Wikisource copy lacks the words “mandarōddhara ānanda”. In the charanas we have normalised a few spellings (naḍede for naḍade, sēride for sēridē, bēḍikoṃbeno for bēḍikoṃbeḍeno).

For life today
Standing lost at a junction in an unfamiliar town, we feel a little shy at first about asking anyone. Only once we admit that we have lost our way can we ask for the right one.
The lines “unable to see the road ahead” and “I walked off the path” carry the same plain admission. The song gently reminds us that there is no shame in asking the way.
