“Jagadōddhārana āḍisidaḷeśōde” is one of the most famous songs of Purandara Dasa. Yashoda fondly plays with the saviour of the whole world, knowing him only as her son. The heart of the song is that wonder: the one no measure can hold lies in a mother’s lap as a little child.
Each charana names some aspect of Krishna’s greatness and then comes home to the plain words “Yashoda played with him”. We give the text in Kannada with a plain meaning of each stanza in Kannada and English.

Yashoda played with, as a mother plays with her baby, the one who lifts up and saves the whole world.
Taking the saviour of the world to be simply her son, Yashoda played with Ranga, whose heart is full of good qualities (or, the Ranga of good qualities who dwells within).
Yashoda played with him whom even the Vedas cannot grasp, whose glory is beyond counting, the jewel among children.
Yashoda played with him who is smaller than the smallest and greater than the greatest, the immeasurable Lord. - 3
Yashoda played with the Supreme Person, the supreme Vasudeva, Purandara Vitthala.

Purandara Dasa (about 1484 to 1564) is a senior figure among the Haridasas. Tradition calls him the father of Carnatic music, crediting him with the graded lessons that students still learn. His songs carry the ankita “Purandara Viṭhala”. His dates are approximate.
The subject is simple: Yashoda plays with her child. Yet in every line the Dasa tells us who the child is: beyond the reach of the Vedas, beyond measure, the Supreme Person. The words “aṇōraṇīyana mahatōmahīyana” in the second charana echo the Katha Upanishad (1.2.20), “aṇor aṇīyān mahato mahīyān”, smaller than the smallest, greater than the greatest. The Dasa takes the Upanishad’s description of the Self and sets it beside a baby in a cradle.
The song is most often sung in raga Kapi. Wikisource gives raga Kapi and Adi tala, though singers do vary. Many remember M. S. Subbulakshmi’s rendering in Kapi as the one that carried the song well beyond Karnataka.
The song has a pallavi, an anupallavi and three charanas. We collated the text from Kannada Wikisource and kannadanudi.com and follow kannadanudi.com for the order of the charanas (Wikisource places the “magugaḷa māṇikyana” line at the start). For the refrain we print the sung form “āḍisidaḷeśōde”. Wikisource has “āḍisidaḷeśōdā” and kannadanudi.com “āḍisidaḷ yaśōdā”.

For life today
A grandmother rocking a cradle does not know what the child will grow into. What sways under her hand is a small body, and folded inside it is a whole life not yet unfolded.
Yashoda’s wonder is of the same kind: the smallest and the greatest lie together in one cradle. The song reminds us to notice the great within the small things we see every day.
