This octet opens with the Upanishadic words “satyam jnanam anantam”, and in the very next line that supreme Brahman is crawling in the courtyard of the cowshed. The whole hymn moves in such pairs: formless, yet with the world as his form, needing no food, yet eating butter. Each verse closes with the call pranamata govindam paramanandam: bow to Govinda, who is supreme bliss.

These paradoxes make sense from the standpoint of Advaita. In ultimate truth Brahman is without attributes, and at the level of maya the same reality is Krishna at play. In the meaning of each verse we have briefly untied each pair.

Truth, knowledge, the infinite and the eternal (as the Taittiriya Upanishad defines Brahman), not the elemental sky, yet the supreme space that the Upanishads call akasha. Fond of crawling about the courtyard of the cowshed: as Brahman he knows no effort, yet as a child he tires himself out. He has many forms imagined through maya, yet is in truth formless, yet has the world itself as his form. He is lord of the Earth and of Lakshmi, and himself has no lord above him. Bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss.
He who, as a child, was frightened when Yashoda scolded him and came to beat him, saying “you are eating mud here!”, and who opened his mouth and showed her the fourteen worlds out to the Lokaloka mountain (in the Puranas, the range that rings the edge of the worlds). The central pillar of the city of the three worlds, the one who lights up all the worlds, yet himself is seen by nothing. Lord of the worlds, the supreme lord: bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss.
Slayer of the demon heroes who were enemies of heaven, remover of the earth’s burden, curer of the disease of worldly existence, liberation itself. He eats butter, yet needs no food, yet at the dissolution takes the worlds themselves as his food. He shines clearly in a particular state of a pure mind, yet is never an object that appears (in Advaita a pure mind reflects Brahman, but Brahman is self luminous). Auspicious, peace alone: bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss.
Gopala, protector of cows, the lord who took the body of a cowherd for play, the cowherd of his clan who was born into it and guarded it. He delighted the cowherds with his games with the gopis and his play of lifting Mount Govardhana. The cows themselves clearly named him Govinda, and he has many names, yet he is far beyond the reach of senses and mind. Bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss. (The word go means cow, speech or the Veda, and sense organ. Gobhih is also read as “by the words of the Veda”, and godhi as senses and intellect.)
He who, in the circle of the gopis, appeared separately beside each one (the story of the rasa dance), and so, though present in difference, shines as the one without difference. Whose beauty is greyed by the dust always raised by the hooves of the cows. The bliss that is grasped through faith and devotion, inconceivable, yet revealing his true being to those who meditate on him, glorious as the wish granting chintamani gem: bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss.
He who took up the clothes of the women absorbed in bathing and climbed a tree, and who drew those unclad women towards him, as they wished to have them back, in order to return them (the episode of the stolen garments in the Bhagavata). He who has shaken off the grief and delusion born of duality, who is awareness itself, who dwells within the intellect, whose only body is pure existence: bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss.
The lovely one, cause of all causes, the first yet without beginning, shining like a dark rain cloud. He danced again and again, with abandon, on the hoods of the serpent Kaliya in the Kalindi, that is the Yamuna. Time itself, yet beyond the divisions of time, holding all things within him, destroyer of the faults of the Kali age, the cause of the movement of past, present and future: bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss.
In the land of Vrindavana, worthy of reverence and worshipped by the hosts of the gods, he gladdens with the nectar of his gentle smile, pure and bright as jasmine, and is great bliss itself. His pair of blissful feet is revered in the minds of all the great sages, who are themselves worthy of reverence, and he is an ocean of every praiseworthy quality: bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss.
Whoever, with a mind offered to Govinda, recites this Govindashtakam, saying “Govinda, Achyuta, Madhava, Vishnu, lord of Gokula, Krishna”, has all his sins washed away by the nectar water of meditation on Govinda’s lotus feet. He reaches that Govinda, the nectar of supreme bliss, who dwells within.

About this hymn

Tradition attributes this octet to Adi Shankaracharya. As with many hymns under his name, the attribution rests on tradition alone. Its language, however, is full of the technical vocabulary of Advaita: pure existence, the mental mode, what is imagined through maya, liberation.

Its distinctive feature is the weaving of two voices. On one side stands the attributeless Brahman of the Upanishads, on the other the child Krishna of the Bhagavata: eating mud, stealing butter, lifting Govardhana, dancing on Kaliya, taking the gopis’ clothes. Since in Advaita the play at the level of maya is not other than Brahman in ultimate truth, both can stand in a single line. Many commentators read the episode of the garments as a symbol of the last veil between the soul and God being drawn aside.

The play of sound is striking too. The words loka and aloka recur in the second verse, go in the fourth, kala and kala in the seventh, brinda and nanda in the eighth. The metre has long lines counted in morae rather than syllables, and sources do not agree on its name. After eight verses the ninth is the phalashruti.
