This is a single verse for meditating on Sri Sharadamba. We use it to recall, one by one, what the Mother holds in her hands and to set her form in the mind.

Many homes recite this verse before worship, a lesson or study. In the last line we ask her to grant us auspiciousness.

She holds in her hands the sign of knowledge, a rosary and a pot of nectar, and shines like ten million suns. She is the wife of Brahma, born of the lotus, and grants all they wish to the crowds who bow to her. Indra, Upendra and others worship her. She is mother of the three worlds, source of speech, and refuge for those who seek shelter. May that Sri Sharadamba, giver of every happiness, bestow auspiciousness on us.

About this hymn

The source gives no author for this verse, so we do not say whose composition it is.

The verse calls Sharada the wife of Brahma and praises her as mother of the three worlds. Both are in the text itself.

Three emblems appear in her hands: the gesture of knowledge, a rosary and a pot of nectar. They give meditation something clear to hold in view.

We give the text of the verse exactly as the source has it. The name Sharada comes in the last line of the verse.

Pausing for half a minute before new work is not hard. Like the bell on the first morning of term that lines everyone up, this verse readies the mind for study.
