ಅವಿದಿತಗುಣಾಪಿ ಸುಕವೇರ್ಭಣಿತಿಃ: ವಾಸನೆ ತಿಳಿಯುವ ಮೊದಲೇ ಸೆಳೆಯುವ ಮಾಲೆ

ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಸಾಲನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದ ಕೂಡಲೇ ಮನಸ್ಸು ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ. ಅರ್ಥ ಆಮೇಲೆ ತೆರೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ.

ಆ ಅನುಭವವನ್ನು ಈ ಆರ್ಯಾ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಮಲ್ಲಿಗೆಯ ಮಾಲೆಯ ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಡಿದಿಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಅವಿದಿತಗುಣಾಪಿ ಸುಕವೇರ್ಭಣಿತಿಃ ಕರ್ಣೇಷು ವಮತಿ ಮಧುಧಾರಾಮ್ ।
ಅನಧಿಗತಪರಿಮಲಾಪಿ ಹಿ ಹರತಿ ದೃಶಂ ಮಾಲತೀಮಾಲಾ ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)

अविदितगुणापि सुकवेर्भणितिः कर्णेषु वमति मधुधाराम् ।
अनधिगतपरिमलापि हि हरति दृशं मालतीमाला ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

aviditaguṇāpi sukaverbhaṇitiḥ karṇeṣu vamati madhudhārām |

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಅವಿದಿತಗುಣಾ ಅಪಿ (अविदितगुणा अपि, aviditaguṇā api) = ಗುಣ ತಿಳಿಯದಿದ್ದರೂ (though its merits are not yet known)
ಸುಕವೇಃ (सुकवेः, sukaveḥ) = ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕವಿಯ (of a good poet)
ಭಣಿತಿಃ (भणितिः, bhaṇitiḥ) = ಮಾತು, ಹೇಳಿಕೆ (the utterance)
ಕರ್ಣೇಷು (कर्णेषु, karṇeṣu) = ಕಿವಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ (into the ears)
ವಮತಿ (वमति, vamati) = ಸುರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ (pours out)
ಮಧುಧಾರಾಮ್ (मधुधाराम्, madhudhārām) = ಜೇನಿನ ಧಾರೆಯನ್ನು (a stream of honey)
ಅನಧಿಗತಪರಿಮಲಾ ಅಪಿ (अनधिगतपरिमला अपि, anadhigataparimalā api) = ಪರಿಮಳ ಇನ್ನೂ ಮೂಗಿಗೆ ಬಾರದಿದ್ದರೂ (though its fragrance has not yet reached one)
ಹಿ (हि, hi) = ಖಂಡಿತವಾಗಿ (indeed)
ಹರತಿ ದೃಶಮ್ (हरति दृशम्, harati dṛśam) = ಕಣ್ಣನ್ನು ಸೆಳೆಯುತ್ತದೆ (carries off the eye)
ಮಾಲತೀಮಾಲಾ (मालतीमाला, mālatīmālā) = ಮಲ್ಲಿಗೆಯ ಮಾಲೆ (a garland of jasmine)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕವಿಯ ಮಾತು ಅದರ ಗುಣ ಇನ್ನೂ ತಿಳಿಯದಿದ್ದರೂ ಕಿವಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಜೇನಿನ ಧಾರೆಯನ್ನು ಸುರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಮಲ್ಲಿಗೆಯ ಮಾಲೆ ಪರಿಮಳ ಮೂಗಿಗೆ ಬಾರದ ಮೊದಲೇ ಕಣ್ಣನ್ನು ಸೆಳೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವಂತೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

A good poet’s utterance pours a stream of honey into the ears even before its merits are understood, just as a garland of jasmine carries off the eye before its fragrance has even reached one.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಭಣಿತಿ ಎಂದರೆ ಹೇಳಿಕೆ, ಮಾತಿನ ಬಗೆ. ಕವಿ ಏನನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿದ ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಹೇಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಈ ಪದ ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

Bhaniti means the manner of saying. The word points not to what the poet said but to how he said it.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಎರಡೂ ಸಾಲುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದೇ ರಚನೆ ಇದೆ. ಗುಣ ತಿಳಿಯದಿದ್ದರೂ, ಪರಿಮಳ ತಿಳಿಯದಿದ್ದರೂ. ಆ ಪುನರಾವೃತ್ತಿಯೇ ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಗಟ್ಟಿಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

Both halves of the verse share one shape: though its merit is unknown, though its fragrance is unknown. The repetition itself fastens the comparison.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಮೊದಲ ಅನಿಸಿಕೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಬೇಗ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಗಮನಿಸಿದೆ. ಮಾತಿನ ಲಯ, ಧ್ವನಿ, ಆಯ್ಕೆಯ ಪದ ಇವು ಅರ್ಥ ತಲುಪುವ ಮೊದಲೇ ಕೇಳುಗನನ್ನು ತಟ್ಟುತ್ತವೆ.

The verse has noticed how quickly a first impression works. Rhythm, tone and the choice of a word reach the listener before the meaning does.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾದ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಹೇಳಬೇಕಾದಾಗ ಮೊದಲ ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸಿದ್ಧಪಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಕೆಲಸವಲ್ಲ.

So preparing the first sentence, when something important has to be said, is not a small thing.
