Even when the other man is in fact no good, the noble man speaks of his good points and the mean man of his faults. The badness spoken of is the same in both cases, and yet one speaker rises and the other sinks.
About this subhashita
The cleverness lies in the word asataḥ. The verse itself grants that the man spoken of really is bad. So the one who reported the faults told no lie. That he sinks even while telling the truth is the sharp part of the verse.
The verse ends on two words of direction, urdhvam and adhaḥ. The speech does not move the man spoken of. It assigns a place to the speaker.

There are two ways to speak about a weak junior at a meeting of seniors, and both may be true. Which one we pick tells that room about us.
This does not mean faults must never be named. Keeping quiet about something that touches a patient’s safety is wrong. But naming it so it can be fixed is one thing, and naming it for the pleasure of the listeners is another.
