ಅಪೇಕ್ಷನ್ತೇ ನ ಚ ಸ್ನೇಹಂ: ಎಣ್ಣೆ ಬೇಡದ ರತ್ನದ ದೀಪ

ದೀಪ ಉರಿಯಲು ಬೇಕಾದ್ದು ಸಾಕಷ್ಟಿದೆ. ಎಣ್ಣೆ ಬೇಕು, ಹಿಡಿಯುವ ಪಾತ್ರೆ ಬೇಕು, ಗಾಳಿ ಬಡಿಯದ ಒಂದು ಜಾಗ ಬೇಕು. ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ದೀಪ ಹೊತ್ತಿಸಿದವರಿಗೆ ಇದು ಗೊತ್ತು.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆ ಮೂರನ್ನೂ ಒಂದೊಂದಾಗಿ ತೆಗೆದುಹಾಕುತ್ತದೆ. ಉಳಿಯುವುದು ರತ್ನದ ದೀಪ. ಉತ್ತಮರನ್ನು ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಲಿಸಿ ಮುಗಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಅಪೇಕ್ಷನ್ತೇ ನ ಚ ಸ್ನೇಹಂ ನ ಪಾತ್ರಂ ನ ದೇಶಾನ್ತರಮ್ ।
ಸದಾ ಲೋಕಹಿತೇ ಯುಕ್ತಾ ರತ್ನದೀಪಾ ಇವೋತ್ತಮಾಃ ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)

अपेक्षन्ते न च स्नेहं न पात्रं न देशान्तरम् ।
सदा लोकहिते युक्ता रत्नदीपा इवोत्तमाः ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

apekṣante na ca snehaṃ na pātraṃ na deśāntaram |
sadā lokahite yuktā ratnadīpā ivottamāḥ ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಅಪೇಕ್ಷನ್ತೇ (अपेक्षन्ते, apekṣante) = ಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಕಾಯುತ್ತಾರೆ (they look for)
ನ ಚ (न च, na ca) = ಇಲ್ಲವೇ ಇಲ್ಲ (and not at all)
ಸ್ನೇಹಮ್ (स्नेहम्, sneham) = ಎಣ್ಣೆಯನ್ನು (oil)
ನ (न, na) = ಬೇಡ (nor)
ಪಾತ್ರಮ್ (पात्रम्, pātram) = ಹಿಡಿಯುವ ಪಾತ್ರೆಯನ್ನು (a vessel to hold it)
ನ (न, na) = ಬೇಡ (nor)
ದೇಶಾನ್ತರಮ್ (देशान्तरम्, deśāntaram) = ಬೇರೊಂದು ಜಾಗವನ್ನು (some other place)
ಸದಾ (सदा, sadā) = ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ (always)
ಲೋಕಹಿತೇ (लोकहिते, lokahite) = ಲೋಕದ ಒಳಿತಿನಲ್ಲಿ (in the good of the world)

ರತ್ನದೀಪಾಃ (रत्नदीपाः, ratnadīpāḥ) = ರತ್ನದ ದೀಪಗಳು (lamps that are jewels)

ಉತ್ತಮಾಃ (उत्तमाः, uttamāḥ) = ಉತ್ತಮರು (the best of men)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಉತ್ತಮರು ಎಣ್ಣೆಯನ್ನೂ ಕೇಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಹಿಡಿಯುವ ಪಾತ್ರೆಯನ್ನೂ ಕೇಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಬೇರೊಂದು ಜಾಗವನ್ನೂ ಕೇಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ರತ್ನದ ದೀಪಗಳಂತೆ ಅವರು ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ಲೋಕದ ಒಳಿತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಿಕೊಂಡಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

The best of men look for no oil, no vessel to hold it, no other place to stand in. Like lamps that are jewels, they are always at work in the good of the world.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಮೂರೂ ಪದಗಳಿಗೆ ಎರಡೆರಡು ಅರ್ಥ ಇದೆ. ಸ್ನೇಹ ಎಂದರೆ ಎಣ್ಣೆ, ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಪ್ರೀತಿ. ಪಾತ್ರ ಎಂದರೆ ದೀಪದ ಪಾತ್ರೆ, ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಯೋಗ್ಯನಾದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ. ದೇಶಾನ್ತರ ಎಂದರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಜಾಗ, ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಪರದೇಶ. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಮೂರೂ ನಿರಾಕರಣೆಗಳು ದೀಪಕ್ಕೂ ಮನುಷ್ಯನಿಗೂ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಕೂರುತ್ತವೆ.

All three words here carry two senses. Sneha is oil and also affection. Patra is the lamp’s vessel and also a worthy recipient. Deshantara is another place and also a foreign country. So each of the three refusals fits the lamp and the man at once.

ರತ್ನದೀಪ ಎಂಬುದು ಕಾವ್ಯಪರಂಪರೆಯ ಚಿತ್ರ. ತಾನೇ ಬೆಳಗುವ ರತ್ನವನ್ನು ಕೋಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇಟ್ಟರೆ ಅದೇ ದೀಪ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಬತ್ತಿ ಇಲ್ಲ, ಎಣ್ಣೆ ಇಲ್ಲ, ಗಾಳಿಯ ಭಯ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದಲೇ ಈ ಹೋಲಿಕೆಗೆ ಮೂರು ನಿರಾಕರಣೆಗಳೂ ಬೇಕಾಯಿತು.

Ratnadipa is an image from the poets. A gem that shines of itself, set in a room, is a lamp. It has no wick, no oil and nothing to fear from the wind. That is why the comparison needed all three refusals.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಸರಿಯಾದ ಸಂದರ್ಭ ಬರಲಿ, ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಕೇಳಲಿ, ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಸ್ಥಳ ಸಿಗಲಿ ಎಂದು ಕಾಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೆ ಕೆಲಸ ಆರಂಭವಾಗುವುದೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಇರುವ ಜಾಗದಲ್ಲೇ ಶುರು ಮಾಡುವವರು ಕಡಿಮೆ.

If we wait for the right occasion, for someone to ask, for a better place, the work never starts. Those who begin where they already stand are few.

ಎಣ್ಣೆ ಬೇಕಾಗುವ ದೀಪ ಕೀಳು ಎಂದು ಇದರ ಅರ್ಥವಲ್ಲ. ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹುಪಾಲು ಜನಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದಿಷ್ಟು ಬೆಂಬಲ, ಒಂದಿಷ್ಟು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಮಾತು ಬೇಕು. ರತ್ನದ ದೀಪ ಅಪರೂಪ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಶ್ಲೋಕವೂ ಬಲ್ಲದು, ಅದಕ್ಕೇ ಉತ್ತಮರು ಎಂದಿದೆ.

This does not make the lamp that needs oil a lesser thing. Most of us need some support and some kind words. The verse knows a jewel lamp is rare, which is why it says the best of men.
