ಒಂದು ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ ಎಂದು ಮೊದಲು ಹೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಸುಲಭ. ಹೇಳಿಕೊಂಡ ಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲೇ ಒಂದಿಷ್ಟು ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಆಮೇಲೆ ಕೆಲಸ ಆಗದಿದ್ದರೂ ಆ ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆ ಹೋಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆ ಘೋಷಣೆಯನ್ನೇ ತೆಗೆದುಹಾಕುತ್ತದೆ. ಮೊದಲ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಜ್ಜನರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳಿ, ಎರಡನೆಯ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸೂರ್ಯನನ್ನೂ ಕಮಲವನ್ನೂ ತಂದು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸನ್ತೋ ಮನಸಿ ಕೃತ್ವೈವ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಾಃ ಕೃತ್ಯವಸ್ತುನಿ ।
ಕಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರತಿಶೃಣೋತಿ ಸ್ಮ ಕಮಲೇಭ್ಯಃ ಶ್ರಿಯಂ ರವಿಃ ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಸನ್ತಃ (सन्तः, santaḥ) = ಸಜ್ಜನರು (the good)
- ಮನಸಿ (मनसि, manasi) = ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ (in their own mind)
- ಕೃತ್ವಾ (कृत्वा, kṛtvā) = ನಿಶ್ಚಯಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು (having settled it)
- ಏವ (एव, eva) = ಅಷ್ಟೇ (and no more than that)
- ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಾಃ (प्रवृत्ताः, pravṛttāḥ) = ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಇಳಿದವರು (set to work)
- ಕೃತ್ಯವಸ್ತುನಿ (कृत्यवस्तुनि, kṛtyavastuni) = ಮಾಡಬೇಕಾದ ಕೆಲಸದಲ್ಲಿ (on the thing that has to be done)
- ಕಸ್ಯ (कस्य, kasya) = ಯಾರಿಗೆ (to whom)
- ಪ್ರತಿಶೃಣೋತಿ ಸ್ಮ (प्रतिशृणोति स्म, pratiśṛṇoti sma) = ಮಾತು ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದ (did it ever give its word)
- ಕಮಲೇಭ್ಯಃ (कमलेभ्यः, kamalebhyaḥ) = ಕಮಲಗಳಿಗೆ (for the lotuses)
- ಶ್ರಿಯಮ್ (श्रियम्, śriyam) = ಚೆಲುವನ್ನು (their beauty)
- ರವಿಃ (रविः, raviḥ) = ಸೂರ್ಯ (the sun)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಸಜ್ಜನರು ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲೇ ನಿಶ್ಚಯಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಮಾಡಬೇಕಾದ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಇಳಿಯುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಅಷ್ಟೇ. ಕಮಲಗಳಿಗೆ ಚೆಲುವನ್ನು ಕೊಡುವ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಯಾರಿಗೆ ಮಾತು ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದ?
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
Good men settle a thing in their own mind and then simply set to work on it. To whom did the sun ever give its word that it would give the lotuses their beauty?
ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita
ಪ್ರತಿಶೃಣೋತಿ ಎಂಬ ಪದ ಪ್ರತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಶ್ರು ಎಂಬ ಎರಡರಿಂದ ಆಗಿದೆ. ಶ್ರು ಎಂದರೆ ಕೇಳುವುದು, ಪ್ರತಿಶ್ರು ಎಂದರೆ ಮಾತು ಕೊಡುವುದು. ಜೊತೆಗಿರುವ ಸ್ಮ ಎಂಬ ಸಣ್ಣ ಪದ ವರ್ತಮಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಗತಕಾಲದ ಅರ್ಥ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಎಂದಾದರೂ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದನೆ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
The word pratishrinoti is made of prati and shru. Shru is to hear, and pratishru is to promise. The small word sma beside it gives a present tense a past sense. So the question becomes whether the sun ever gave such a word.
ಕಮಲೇಭ್ಯಃ ಎಂಬುದು ಚತುರ್ಥಿ, ಕಮಲಗಳ ಪರವಾಗಿ ಎಂದು. ಸೂರ್ಯನಿಗೆ ಕಮಲದ ಪರಿಚಯವೂ ಇಲ್ಲ, ಕಮಲ ಕೇಳಿಕೊಂಡೂ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೂ ಬೆಳಕು ಬಿದ್ದ ಕೂಡಲೇ ಹೂವು ಅರಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಉಪಕಾರ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾತುಕತೆ ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಈ ಚಿತ್ರ ಶಬ್ದವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
Kamalebhyaḥ is a dative, for the sake of the lotuses. The sun has no acquaintance with the lotus, and the lotus has asked for nothing. Yet the flower opens the moment the light falls. The image shows without argument that a kindness and a negotiation are different things.

ಸಮಿತಿ ರಚಿಸಿ, ಘೋಷಣೆ ಮಾಡಿ, ಆಮೇಲೆ ಕೆಲಸ ಮರೆತುಹೋಗುವ ಯೋಜನೆಗಳು ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಡೆ ಇವೆ. ಮೊದಲು ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಭಾಗವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿ ಆಮೇಲೆ ಹೇಳುವುದು ಬೇರೆ ಬಗೆಯ ಶಿಸ್ತು.
Projects that begin with a committee and an announcement and then forget the work are everywhere. Finishing one small part first and speaking afterwards is a different discipline.
ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಗುಟ್ಟಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಜೊತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುವವರಿಗೆ ಹೇಳಬೇಕಾದ್ದನ್ನು ಹೇಳಬೇಕು. ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಮೊದಲೇ ಪ್ರತಿಫಲ ಪಡೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನಷ್ಟೇ ಅದು ಗುರಿ ಮಾಡಿದೆ.
The verse is not asking for secrecy. What co workers need to know must be told them. What it takes aim at is only the habit of drawing the reward before the work.
