ಒಂದು ಸಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರು ದೊಡ್ಡವರು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ನಾವು ಅವರ ಮಾತು ಕೇಳುವ ಮೊದಲೇ ತೀರ್ಮಾನಿಸಿಬಿಡುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಕಾರು, ಉಡುಪು, ಜೊತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದವರ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆ, ವೇದಿಕೆಯ ಮೇಲಿನ ಸ್ಥಳ. ಇವು ಬೇಗ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತವೆ.
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆ ಬಾಹ್ಯ ಸಾಮಗ್ರಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ನಮಸ್ಕಾರವನ್ನೇ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಸ್ತೋತ್ರದ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದು ಅದೇ ರೂಪದಿಂದ ಚುಚ್ಚುವುದು ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಜಾಣ್ಮೆ.
ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಪೇಟೀಚೀವರಪಟ್ಟವಸ್ತ್ರಪಟಲಶ್ವೇತಾತಪತ್ರಚ್ಛಟಾ-
ಶಾಟೀಹಾರಕಘೋಟಕಸ್ಫುಟಘಟಾಟೋಪಾಯ ತುಭ್ಯಂ ನಮಃ ।
ಯೇನಾನಕ್ಷರಕುಕ್ಷಯೋಽಪಿ ಜಗತಃ ಕುರ್ವನ್ತಿ ಸರ್ವಜ್ಞತಾ-
ಭ್ರಾನ್ತಿಂ ಯೇನ ವಿನಾ ತು ಹಾಸ್ಯಪದವೀಂ ಸನ್ತೋಽಪಿ ಕಷ್ಟಂ ಗತಾಃ ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಪೇಟೀ (पेटी, peṭī) = ಪೆಟ್ಟಿಗೆ (a trunk)
- ಚೀವರ (चीवर, cīvara) = ನಿಲುವಂಗಿ (a robe)
- ಪಟ್ಟವಸ್ತ್ರ (पट्टवस्त्र, paṭṭavastra) = ರೇಷ್ಮೆಬಟ್ಟೆ (silk cloth)
- ಪಟಲ (पटल, paṭala) = ರಾಶಿ (a heap)
- ಶ್ವೇತಾತಪತ್ರ (श्वेतातपत्र, śvetātapatra) = ಬಿಳಿಯ ಕೊಡೆ (a white parasol)
- ಛಟಾ (छटा, chaṭā) = ಕಳೆ, ಹೊಳಪು (splendour)
- ಶಾಟೀ (शाटी, śāṭī) = ಶಾಲು (a shawl)
- ಹಾರಕ (हारक, hāraka) = ಸರ (a necklace)
- ಘೋಟಕ (घोटक, ghoṭaka) = ಕುದುರೆ (a horse)
- ಸ್ಫುಟಘಟಾಟೋಪಾಯ (स्फुटघटाटोपाय, sphuṭaghaṭāṭopāya) = ಎದ್ದುಕಾಣುವ ಆ ಆಡಂಬರದ ಒಟ್ಟು ರಾಶಿಗೆ (to that whole manifest pomp)
- ತುಭ್ಯಂ ನಮಃ (तुभ्यं नमः, tubhyaṃ namaḥ) = ನಿನಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ (salutation to you)
- ಯೇನ (येन, yena) = ಯಾವುದರಿಂದ (by which)
- ಅನಕ್ಷರಕುಕ್ಷಯಃ ಅಪಿ (अनक्षरकुक्षयः अपि, anakṣarakukṣayaḥ api) = ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಅಕ್ಷರವೂ ಇಲ್ಲದವರೂ (even those without one letter in their bellies)
- ಜಗತಃ (जगतः, jagataḥ) = ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ (in the world)
- ಕುರ್ವನ್ತಿ (कुर्वन्ति, kurvanti) = ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ (produce)
- ಸರ್ವಜ್ಞತಾಭ್ರಾನ್ತಿಂ (सर्वज्ञताभ्रान्तिं, sarvajñatābhrāntiṃ) = ಸರ್ವಜ್ಞರೆಂಬ ಭ್ರಮೆಯನ್ನು (the illusion of omniscience)
- ಯೇನ ವಿನಾ ತು (येन विना तु, yena vinā tu) = ಯಾವುದು ಇಲ್ಲದೆ ಹೋದರೆ (but without which)
- ಹಾಸ್ಯಪದವೀಂ (हास्यपदवीं, hāsyapadavīṃ) = ಹಾಸ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಗುರಿಯಾಗುವ ಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು (the station of a laughing stock)
- ಸನ್ತಃ ಅಪಿ (सन्तः अपि, santaḥ api) = ಸಜ್ಜನರೂ (even the good)
- ಕಷ್ಟಂ (कष्टं, kaṣṭaṃ) = ಎಂಥ ಕಷ್ಟ (more is the pity)
- ಗತಾಃ (गताः, gatāḥ) = ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ (have reached)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಪೆಟ್ಟಿಗೆ, ನಿಲುವಂಗಿ, ರಾಶಿ ರೇಷ್ಮೆಬಟ್ಟೆ, ಬಿಳಿಯ ಕೊಡೆಗಳ ಕಳೆ, ಶಾಲು, ಸರ, ಕುದುರೆ. ಎದ್ದುಕಾಣುವ ಈ ಆಡಂಬರದ ರಾಶಿಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ. ಇದರಿಂದಲೇ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಅಕ್ಷರವೂ ಇಲ್ಲದವರೂ ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ತಾವು ಸರ್ವಜ್ಞರೆಂಬ ಭ್ರಮೆಯನ್ನು ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇದು ಇಲ್ಲದೆ ಹೋದರೆ ಸಜ್ಜನರೂ ಹಾಸ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಗುರಿಯಾಗಿ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
Trunks, robes, heaps of silk cloth, the splendour of white parasols, shawls, necklaces, horses. Salutation to you, manifest pomp made of all these. By you, men who have not one letter in their bellies create in the world the illusion of omniscience. And without you, more is the pity, even good men have come to the station of a laughing stock.
ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita
ತುಭ್ಯಂ ನಮಃ ಎಂಬುದು ಸ್ತೋತ್ರಗಳ ನುಡಿ. ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಸಲ್ಲಬೇಕಾದ ಆ ನುಡಿಯನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪೆಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಕುದುರೆಗಳ ರಾಶಿಗೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ವ್ಯಂಗ್ಯ ಇರುವುದು ಅರ್ಥದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲ್ಲ, ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ.
Tubhyam namah is the language of hymns. Here that language, which belongs to a god, is offered to a pile of trunks and horses. The irony lies not in the sense but in the form.
ಮೊದಲ ಎರಡು ಪಾದಗಳು ಒಂದೇ ಸಮಾಸ. ಟ ಮತ್ತು ಠ ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳು ಸಾಲಿನ ತುಂಬ ಮತ್ತೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಬಡಿಯುತ್ತವೆ. ಸಾಮಗ್ರಿಯ ರಾಶಿಯನ್ನು ಶಬ್ದದ ರಾಶಿಯಿಂದಲೇ ಕೇಳಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಯೋಗ ಇದು.
The first two lines are a single compound. The syllables ta and tha knock through the line again and again. The heap of goods is made audible by a heap of sound.
ಅನಕ್ಷರಕುಕ್ಷಿ ಎಂದರೆ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಕ್ಷರವಿಲ್ಲದವನು. ಓದನ್ನು ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಯ ತುಂಬಿಕೆಗೆ ಹೋಲಿಸುವ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದ ವಾಡಿಕೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಚುಚ್ಚುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಬಳಕೆಯಾಗಿದೆ.
Anaksharakukshi means one with no letter in his belly. The Sanskrit habit of treating learning as something that fills the stomach is put here to the work of mockery.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಆಡಂಬರವನ್ನು ನಂಬಬೇಡಿ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುವುದು ಸುಲಭ. ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಮಾತು. ಅದು ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ, ಮತ್ತು ಅದಿಲ್ಲದವರ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಕೇಳುವವರೂ ಇಲ್ಲ.
It is easy to say do not be taken in by show. The verse is saying something else: show works, and those without it find no one listening.
ಇದರಿಂದ ಎರಡು ದಾರಿ. ಒಂದು, ಬೇರೆಯವರನ್ನು ಅಳೆಯುವಾಗ ಹೊರಗಿನದನ್ನು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಎಣಿಸುವುದು. ಎರಡು, ನಮ್ಮ ಕೆಲಸ ತಲುಪಬೇಕಾದವರಿಗೆ ತಲುಪಲು ಬೇಕಾದಷ್ಟು ಹೊರಗಿನ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು. ಎರಡನೆಯದನ್ನು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ತಪ್ಪೆಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.
Two courses follow. One, count the outward things for a little less when judging others. Two, arrange as much of the outward as our work needs in order to reach the people it is for. The verse does not call the second a fault.
