ಸನ್ತಃ ಸ್ವತಃ ಪ್ರಕಾಶನ್ತೇ: ಕಸ್ತೂರಿ ಪ್ರಮಾಣ ಕೇಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ

ಸಂತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಮಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡವನು ಕೂಗಿ ಕರೆಯಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ. ಗಾಳಿ ಅವನ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅದೇ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಗುಣದ ವಿಷಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಅನುಷ್ಟುಪ್ ಛಂದಸ್ಸಿನ ಮೊದಲ ಅರ್ಧ ತತ್ವವನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿ, ಎರಡನೆಯ ಅರ್ಧ ಕಸ್ತೂರಿಯ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಯನ್ನು ಇಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಸನ್ತಃ ಸ್ವತಃ ಪ್ರಕಾಶನ್ತೇ ಗುಣಾ ನ ಪರತೋ ನೃಣಾಮ್ ।
ಆಮೋದೋ ನಹಿ ಕಸ್ತೂರ್ಯಾಃ ಶಪಥೇನ ವಿಭಾವ್ಯತೇ ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)

सन्तः स्वतः प्रकाशन्ते गुणा न परतो नृणाम् ।
आमोदो नहि कस्तूर्याः शपथेन विभाव्यते ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

santaḥ svataḥ prakāśante guṇā na parato nṛṇām |
āmodo nahi kastūryāḥ śapathena vibhāvyate ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಸನ್ತಃ (सन्तः, santaḥ) = ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವರು (the good)
ಸ್ವತಃ (स्वतः, svataḥ) = ತಾವಾಗಿಯೇ (of themselves)
ಪ್ರಕಾಶನ್ತೇ (प्रकाशन्ते, prakāśante) = ಬೆಳಗುತ್ತಾರೆ (shine forth)
ಗುಣಾ (गुणा, guṇā) = ಗುಣಗಳು (the virtues)
ನ (न, na) = ಇಲ್ಲ (not)
ಪರತೋ (परतो, parato) = ಬೇರೆಯವರಿಂದ (from another)
ನೃಣಾಮ್ (नृणाम्, nṛṇām) = ಮನುಷ್ಯರ (of men)
ಆಮೋದೋ (आमोदो, āmodo) = ಪರಿಮಳ (the fragrance)
ನಹಿ (नहि, nahi) = ಖಂಡಿತ ಇಲ್ಲ (surely not)
ಕಸ್ತೂರ್ಯಾಃ (कस्तूर्याः, kastūryāḥ) = ಕಸ್ತೂರಿಯ (of musk)
ಶಪಥೇನ (शपथेन, śapathena) = ಪ್ರಮಾಣ ಮಾಡಿ ಹೇಳುವುದರಿಂದ (by an oath)
ವಿಭಾವ್ಯತೇ (विभाव्यते, vibhāvyate) = ಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ (is made evident)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವರು ತಾವಾಗಿಯೇ ಬೆಳಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮನುಷ್ಯರ ಗುಣಗಳು ಬೇರೆಯವರಿಂದ ಬೆಳಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಕಸ್ತೂರಿಯ ಪರಿಮಳವನ್ನು ಯಾರೂ ಪ್ರಮಾಣ ಮಾಡಿ ಹೇಳಿ ಸಾಧಿಸಬೇಕಾಗಿಲ್ಲ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

The good shine of themselves. A man’s virtues are not lit up by anyone else. Nobody has to swear an oath to establish that musk has a scent.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ವಿಭಾವ್ಯತೇ ಎಂದರೆ ಕಾಣುವಂತೆ ಆಗುವುದು, ಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗುವುದು. ಇದು ವ್ಯವಹಾರದ ಪದ. ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ ಹೇಳಿ ಸಾಧಿಸುವ ಸಭೆಯ ವಾತಾವರಣವನ್ನು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಒಳಗೆ ತರುತ್ತದೆ. ಪರಿಮಳಕ್ಕೆ ಆ ಸಭೆ ಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುವುದಕ್ಕೇ ತರುತ್ತದೆ.

Vibhavyate means to be made evident, to be established. It is a word from the world of affairs, of proof and testimony. The verse brings that air in, and only so as to say that a scent needs none of it.

ಕಸ್ತೂರಿಯನ್ನು ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡದ್ದು ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮ. ಅದು ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಚಂದವಲ್ಲ, ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಕಪ್ಪಾದ ಉಂಡೆ. ಅದರ ಬೆಲೆ ಇರುವುದು ಕಾಣದ ಪರಿಮಳದಲ್ಲಿ. ಗುಣವೂ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ, ಹೊರಗಿನ ತೋರಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲ.

The choice of musk is careful. It is nothing to look at, a dark lump. Its worth is in a scent you cannot see. Virtue is like that too, not in the outward showing.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುವವನಿಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಾನೇ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಒತ್ತಡ ಇಂದು ಹೆಚ್ಚು. ಆದರೆ ಕೆಲಸದ ಗುಣ ಒಂದು ವರ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ತಾನೇ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಯಾರ ಬಳಿ ರೋಗಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಬರುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಯಾವ ಪ್ರಚಾರಕ್ಕೂ ಸಿಗದ ಲೆಕ್ಕ.

Anyone doing good work today feels pressure to announce it. But the quality of the work speaks for itself within a year. Which doctor the patients keep coming back to is a figure no advertising can produce.

ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಮೌನವಾಗಿಯೇ ಇರಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ತನ್ನ ಗುಣವನ್ನು ತಾನೇ ಪ್ರಮಾಣ ಮಾಡಿ ಸಾಧಿಸಬೇಕಾದ ಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಬಂದರೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಏನೋ ಮೊದಲೇ ತಪ್ಪಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದಷ್ಟೇ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿದೆ.

The verse is not asking for silence. It says only that if you have come to the point of swearing to your own qualities, something has already gone wrong.
