ಪಾತಿತೋಽಪಿ ಕರಾಘಾತೈಃ: ಹೊಡೆದಷ್ಟೂ ಮೇಲೇರುವ ಚೆಂಡು

ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಚೆಂಡನ್ನು ನೆಲಕ್ಕೆ ಒತ್ತಿ ಹೊಡೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಜೋರಾಗಿ ಹೊಡೆದಷ್ಟೂ ಅದು ಮೇಲಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಆಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಗೊತ್ತಿರುವ ಮಾತು.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆ ಚೆಂಡನ್ನು ಎತ್ತಿಕೊಂಡು ಮನುಷ್ಯನ ಪಾಡಿಗೆ ತರುತ್ತದೆ. ಸುವೃತ್ತ ಎಂಬ ಒಂದೇ ಪದದಲ್ಲಿ ಚೆಂಡೂ ಸಜ್ಜನನೂ ಸೇರಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಪಾತಿತೋಽಪಿ ಕರಾಘಾತೈರುತ್ಪತತ್ಯೇವ ಕನ್ದುಕಃ ।
ಪ್ರಾಯೇಣ ಹಿ ಸುವೃತ್ತಾನಾಮಸ್ಥಾಯಿನ್ಯೋ ವಿಪತ್ತಯಃ ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)

पातितोऽपि कराघातैरुत्पतत्येव कन्दुकः ।
प्रायेण हि सुवृत्तानामस्थायिन्यो विपत्तयः ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಪಾತಿತೋಽಪಿ (पातितोऽपि, pātito’pi) = ಬೀಳಿಸಿದರೂ (though knocked down)
ಕರಾಘಾತೈಃ (कराघातैः, karāghātaiḥ) = ಕೈಯ ಹೊಡೆತಗಳಿಂದ (by blows of the hand)
ಉತ್ಪತತಿ (उत्पतति, utpatati) = ಮೇಲಕ್ಕೆ ಹಾರುತ್ತದೆ (springs up)
ಏವ (एव, eva) = ಖಂಡಿತವಾಗಿ (indeed)
ಕನ್ದುಕಃ (कन्दुकः, kandukaḥ) = ಚೆಂಡು (the ball)
ಪ್ರಾಯೇಣ (प्रायेण, prāyeṇa) = ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ (as a rule)
ಹಿ (हि, hi) = ಏಕೆಂದರೆ (for)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಕೈಯ ಹೊಡೆತಗಳಿಂದ ನೆಲಕ್ಕೆ ಬೀಳಿಸಿದರೂ ಚೆಂಡು ಮೇಲಕ್ಕೆ ಹಾರುತ್ತದೆ. ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ದುಂಡಾದವುಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ, ಎಂದರೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ನಡತೆಯವರ ಮೇಲೆ, ಕಷ್ಟಗಳು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ನೆಲೆ ನಿಲ್ಲುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Knocked down by blows of the hand, the ball only springs up again. For misfortunes, as a rule, do not settle on what is well rounded, and that is to say on those of good conduct.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಸುವೃತ್ತ ಎಂಬ ಪದದ ಮೇಲೆ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ನಿಂತಿದೆ. ವೃತ್ತ ಎಂದರೆ ವರ್ತುಳ, ಅದೇ ಪದ ನಡತೆ ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನೂ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಸುವೃತ್ತ ಎಂದರೆ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ದುಂಡಾದದ್ದು, ಮತ್ತು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ನಡತೆಯುಳ್ಳವನು. ಚೆಂಡಿಗೂ ಸಜ್ಜನನಿಗೂ ಒಂದೇ ಪದ ಸಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ.

The verse rests on the word suvritta. Vritta is a circle, and the same word means conduct. So suvritta is both well rounded and well behaved. One word fits the ball and the good man alike.

ಅಸ್ಥಾಯಿನ್ಯಃ ಎಂದರೆ ನೆಲೆ ನಿಲ್ಲದವು. ಕಷ್ಟ ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಬಂದದ್ದು ಅಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಕೂತುಬಿಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿದೆ. ದುಂಡಾದ ಮೇಲ್ಮೈಗೆ ಯಾವುದೂ ಅಂಟಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಜಾಗ ಕಡಿಮೆ.

Asthayinyah means without a resting place. The verse does not say trouble will not come. It says trouble will not sit down and stay. A rounded surface gives little for anything to hold on to.

ಪ್ರಾಯೇಣ ಎಂದರೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ. ಈ ಒಂದು ಪದ ಶ್ಲೋಕವನ್ನು ಭರವಸೆಯ ಮಾತಾಗದಂತೆ ಉಳಿಸಿದೆ.

Prayena means as a rule. That single word keeps the verse from turning into a promise.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಒಂದು ತಪ್ಪು ತೀರ್ಮಾನದಿಂದ ಕುಸಿದುಹೋದ ಕಿರಿಯ ವೈದ್ಯನಿಗೆ ಇದು ಹೇಳುವ ಮಾತು ಇದೆ. ಬಿದ್ದದ್ದು ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲ. ಎದ್ದು ನಿಲ್ಲುವ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಬರುವುದು ಅವನ ಹಿಂದಿನ ನಡತೆಯಿಂದ, ಆ ದಿನದ ಧೈರ್ಯದಿಂದ ಅಲ್ಲ.

This has something to say to a young doctor flattened by one bad decision. The fall is not the end. The strength to get up comes from the way he has worked all along, not from the courage he can muster that day.

ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಷ್ಟವೂ ತಾನಾಗಿ ಕಳೆದುಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಇದನ್ನು ಓದಬಾರದು. ಚೆಂಡು ಮೇಲೇರುವುದು ಅದರ ಒಳಗೆ ಗಾಳಿ ಇರುವವರೆಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ. ಆ ಗಾಳಿಯನ್ನು ಕಾಪಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ನಡತೆಯ ಕೆಲಸ.

This should not be read as saying every trouble passes by itself. The ball rises only while there is air in it. Keeping that air is the work of conduct.
