Water was churned for ghee. A stone was squeezed for honey. Ground trembling with the waves of a mirage was looked to for a drink. Hoping for milk, a man without sense milked this old sow. That through a long thirst for wealth a base man was waited upon: that is the pity of it.

About this subhashita

Dugdha and dugdhashaya stand in the same line. The act of milking and the hope of milk are set side by side, so that the sound itself shows which one caused the other.

Not a cow but a sow, and an old one. There is no milk to be had, and the work itself is foul. The verse does not merely call the labour fruitless, it adds the squalor of it.

Mrigatrishnika is the mirage, and inside the word sits the deer’s thirst. The hint that thirst is what makes the water appear links up with dhanatrisha, the thirst for wealth, in the last line.

For life today

That a task is hard is one thing. That it cannot possibly yield anything is another. The second is hard to spot early, because to the man who still hopes it always looks as though the result is just about to arrive.

The verse’s weariness is not aimed at the base man but at the speaker himself. The word kashtam is his own. That tone is useful when one sits down to count up the past years.
