Even while a poem of the highest excellence is being relished again and again by throngs of people, the one inborn obsession of those addicted to envy is the hunting for faults. In a lake where lotuses have opened and swans are at play, the heron still stands with its body hunched, searching with its beak for a snail.
About this subhashita
The printed text reads vighnanivahaih. Alongside asvadyamane, being relished, the reading vijnanivahaih, by throngs of the discerning, fits better. We have recorded both readings here.
Kunchitavapuh means one whose body is drawn in. The swan is open and at play, the heron stands hunched. The two temperaments are separated by posture alone.
The root jush means to partake of, to enjoy. Matsarajushah are those who partake of envy. The word stands opposite asvadyamane: some are savouring the poem, others are savouring their own envy.

For life today
Looking for faults is not a vice. It is part of the work. But if all we ever see in the lake is snails, that is telling us something about our eye rather than about the lake.
When reviewing someone else’s work a small order of business helps: say what is right first, then what is wrong. Change the order and what the other person actually hears changes too.
