ಮಳೆಗಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೋಡ ಎಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಹೊರಟು ಎಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದೆ ಎಂದು ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಗೊತ್ತಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಗಾಳಿ ಹೋದ ಕಡೆಗೆ ಬೇಗ ಬೇಗ ಸಾಗುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅದರ ಒಳಗೆ ಇರುವುದು ನೀರು, ಮತ್ತು ಅದು ಬಿದ್ದ ಕಡೆ ಬೆಳೆ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ.
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಸಜ್ಜನರನ್ನು ಆ ಮೋಡಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಲಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಹೊರಗಿನ ನಡಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ರೀತಿ, ಒಳಗಿನ ವಸ್ತು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ರೀತಿ ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ತಿರುವು ಇದೆ.
ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಮುಹ್ಯನ್ತಶ್ಚಾಪಲರಸಪ್ರಸ್ಥಿತಾಃ ಪಾವನೇ ಪಥಿ ।
ಘನಾ ಇವಾರ್ದ್ರಹೃದಯಾಃ ಸನ್ತೋ ಜೀವನಹೇತವಃ ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಮುಹ್ಯನ್ತಃ (मुह्यन्तः, muhyantaḥ) = ತಮ್ಮನ್ನೇ ಮರೆತವರಂತೆ (as though losing themselves)
- ಚಾಪಲ (चापल, cāpala) = ಚುರುಕಿನ, ಚಂಚಲವಾದ ನಡಿಗೆಯ (of quick and restless movement)
- ರಸ (रस, rasa) = ಒಲವಿನಿಂದ (with a relish)
- ಪ್ರಸ್ಥಿತಾಃ (प्रस्थिताः, prasthitāḥ) = ಹೊರಟವರು (having set out)
- ಪಾವನೇ (पावने, pāvane) = ಪವಿತ್ರವಾದ (on the pure)
- ಪಥಿ (पथि, pathi) = ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ (path)
- ಘನಾಃ (घनाः, ghanāḥ) = ಮೋಡಗಳು (clouds)
- ಇವ (इव, iva) = ಹಾಗೆ (like)
- ಆರ್ದ್ರಹೃದಯಾಃ (आर्द्रहृदयाः, ārdrahṛdayāḥ) = ಒದ್ದೆಯಾದ ಹೃದಯದವರು (with a moist heart)
- ಸನ್ತಃ (सन्तः, santaḥ) = ಸಜ್ಜನರು (the good)
- ಜೀವನಹೇತವಃ (जीवनहेतवः, jīvanahetavaḥ) = ಬದುಕಿಗೆ ಕಾರಣರು (are the cause of life)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ತಮ್ಮನ್ನೇ ಮರೆತವರಂತೆ, ಚುರುಕಾಗಿ ಸಾಗುವ ಒಲವಿನಿಂದ ಪವಿತ್ರವಾದ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊರಟಿರುವ ಸಜ್ಜನರು, ಒದ್ದೆಯಾದ ಹೃದಯದಿಂದ ಮೋಡಗಳಂತೆಯೇ ಬದುಕಿಗೆ ಕಾರಣರಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
Losing themselves, carried by a relish for quick movement along the pure path, the good, with their moist hearts, are like the clouds: they are the cause of life.

ಜೀವನ ಎಂಬ ಪದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದಲ್ಲಿ ಬದುಕು ಎಂದೂ, ನೀರು ಎಂದೂ ಅರ್ಥ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಜೀವನಹೇತವಃ ಎಂಬುದು ಮೋಡಗಳಿಗೆ ನೀರಿನ ಮೂಲ ಎಂದಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಸಜ್ಜನರಿಗೆ ಬದುಕಿನ ಆಧಾರ ಎಂದಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯ ತೂಕ ಪೂರ್ತಿ ಈ ಒಂದು ಪದದ ಮೇಲೆ ನಿಂತಿದೆ.
In Sanskrit jivana means both life and water. So jivanahetavaḥ makes the clouds the source of water and the good the support of life. The whole weight of the comparison rests on this one word.
ಆರ್ದ್ರಹೃದಯ ಎಂಬುದೂ ಎರಡು ಕಡೆಗೂ ಸಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ. ಮೋಡದ ಒಳಗೆ ನಿಜವಾಗಿ ನೀರು ಇದೆ, ಸಜ್ಜನನ ಒಳಗೆ ಕರುಣೆ ಇದೆ. ಪಾವನೇ ಪಥಿ ಎಂಬುದೂ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ. ಮೋಡಕ್ಕೆ ಅದು ತಿಳಿಯಾದ ಆಕಾಶದ ದಾರಿ, ಮನುಷ್ಯನಿಗೆ ಅದು ಸತ್ಯದ ದಾರಿ.
Ardrahridaya works on both sides too. There is actual water inside the cloud and compassion inside the good man. So does pavane pathi. For the cloud it is the clear road of the sky, for the man it is the road of right conduct.
ಮುಹ್ಯನ್ತಃ ಎಂಬ ಪದಕ್ಕೆ ಮೂಲ ಅರ್ಥ ಗೊಂದಲಕ್ಕೆ ಒಳಗಾಗುವುದು. ಅದನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮನ್ನೇ ಮರೆತು ಸಾಗುವುದು ಎಂದು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಜಾಣರ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಸಜ್ಜನರು ಲೋಕದ ಲೆಕ್ಕ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲದವರಂತೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನೂ ಈ ಪದ ಕೊಡಬಲ್ಲದು.
The root sense of muhyantaḥ is to be bewildered. We have taken it here as moving along in self forgetfulness. The word can also carry the sense that to shrewd eyes the good look like people who do not know the ways of the world.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುವವರು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಒಂದು ಕಡೆ ನಿಲ್ಲುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇಕು ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವರ ಓಡಾಟ ಅಸ್ತವ್ಯಸ್ತ ಎಂದು ಕಾಣಬಹುದು, ಆದರೆ ಬಿದ್ದ ಕಡೆ ನೀರು ಉಳಿದಿರುತ್ತದೆ.
People who do good work usually do not stay in one place. They go where they are needed. Their movement can look scattered, but water is left wherever they have passed.
ಒದ್ದೆ ಹೃದಯ ಎಂಬುದು ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಕೆಲಸದಲ್ಲಿ ದುರ್ಬಲತೆ ಅಲ್ಲ. ಅದೇ ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ ರೋಗಿಯ ಜೊತೆಯ ಮಾತು ಬರೀ ಕಡತದ ಕೆಲಸವಾಗಿಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಮೋಡ ಸುರಿಯಬೇಕಾದರೆ ಒಳಗೆ ನೀರು ತುಂಬಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಕಾಲವೂ ಬೇಕು.
A moist heart is not a weakness in medical work. Without it the talk with a patient becomes mere paperwork. But a cloud that is to pour must also have had time to fill.
