The Totakashtakam is a hymn of eight verses in which a disciple praises Adi Shankaracharya as his guru. Every verse ends with “bhava śaṅkara deśika me śaraṇam”: Shankara, my teacher, be my refuge. It is still sung in the mathas of the Shankara tradition, and on Guru Purnima and Shankara Jayanti.
Though it sounds like a simple prayer of devotion, the hymn carries the heart of Advaita. The guru is the treasure of the meaning of the Upanishads, the one who teaches the discernment of Ishvara and the jiva, and Shiva himself. Below we give the text in three scripts and the meaning of each verse.

You who know the whole ocean of nectar that is the shastras, you treasure of the meaning taught in the great Upanishads, I hold your spotless feet in my heart. Shankara, my teacher, be my refuge.
Ocean of compassion, protect me, whose heart is pained by the sorrow of the sea of worldly life. Make me one who knows the truth of all the schools of philosophy. Shankara, my teacher, be my refuge.
Through you people have found their true good. You whose fine mind inquires into the knowledge of the Self, make me one who knows the discernment of Ishvara and the jiva. In the Advaita reading this is the insight that, once the limiting adjuncts are set apart, the essence of both is one. Shankara, my teacher, be my refuge.
“You are Bhava, that is Shiva, himself”: this conviction has risen strongly in my mind, full of wonder and delight. Hold back the great ocean of my delusion. Shankara, my teacher, be my refuge.
Only after good deeds have been done in many ways does the longing arise for your sight, the longing for the vision that sees all as one. Protect me, so very helpless. Shankara, my teacher, be my refuge.
To protect the world, great souls take on forms and move about in disguise. Among them, O guru, you shine here like the sun. Shankara, my teacher, be my refuge.
Best of gurus, Shiva whose banner bears the bull, no wise man can equal you. You who cherish those who come for refuge, treasure of truth, Shankara, my teacher, be my refuge.
O guru, I have not clearly mastered even one branch of learning, and I have no gold at all. Show me quickly the grace that comes naturally to you. Shankara, my teacher, be my refuge.
About this hymn
The traditional story runs like this. Among Shankara’s disciples was Giri (also called Anandagiri), a quiet disciple devoted to service. Once, while he had gone to wash his teacher’s clothes, Shankara waited for him before starting the lesson. When the other disciples hinted that he would not follow the lesson anyway, Giri is said to have arrived and sung this ashtaka on the spot.
From then on, tradition says, he was known as Totakacharya and became the first head of Jyotirmath at Badri. The name comes from the totaka metre he used. The story is told in the Shankara Digvijaya works, and we give it as the tradition tells it.
We give the meaning as the Advaita tradition understands it. Two phrases carry this view: the discernment of Ishvara and the jiva in verse 3, and “you are Bhava (Shiva) himself” in verse 4. To see the guru as Shiva himself is the conviction of the Shankara tradition.
We follow the text of stotranidhi.com. In our source the lines of verse 3 were wrongly broken after “vidaṃ bhava”, and we have set them right. In verse 1 we write the compound mahitopaniṣatkathitārthanidhe as one word.
· Sources: several. Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
For life today
We easily overlook the student who sits quietly on the back bench of a classroom. In the story of this ashtaka, the teacher waits for just such a disciple. It reminds us that learning and devotion may be growing inside those who say little.
