Durmuhurta

The bad muhurtas of the day, which vary by weekday, and why some days have two and others one.

Durmuhurta, sometimes written Dur Muhurtam, is the muhurta or muhurtas of the daylight that are considered unfavourable. Unlike Rahu Kala, which is an eighth of the day, a Durmuhurta is a fifteenth, so it lasts about forty-eight minutes.

Daylight is divided into fifteen equal muhurtas. Which of them are Durmuhurta depends on the weekday:

  • Sunday, the fourteenth
  • Monday, the ninth and the thirteenth
  • Tuesday, the fourth and the twelfth
  • Wednesday, the eighth
  • Thursday, the sixth and the twelfth
  • Friday, the fourth and the ninth
  • Saturday, the second

Four of the seven days have two such periods and three have one. There is no deep reason for the asymmetry; it is what the tradition records.

The deities behind the muhurtas

The scheme comes from an older one in which each of the thirty muhurtas of the day and night is presided over by a deity, and the character of the muhurta follows the character of its deity. The muhurtas governed by Rudra, Ahi, Mitra, Pitrs, Vasu, Vishvadeva, Vidhi, Ari and Bhaga in certain positions are the ones that come out as Durmuhurta. The eighth muhurta of the day, governed by Brahma, is the exception at the other end: it is Abhijit, the most favourable of all.

In practice

Durmuhurta is consulted when a time is being chosen with some care, for a wedding, a thread ceremony, a house entry or the start of a journey, rather than for everyday matters. It is a narrower and shorter exclusion than Rahu Kala and is correspondingly easier to work around.

Because it is a fifteenth of the daylight rather than a fixed period, a Durmuhurta in June is longer than one in December, and it shifts with sunrise. Anudina computes it from the day’s actual sunrise and sunset for your town.
