Vijaya Ekadashi

The ekadashi of the dark fortnight of Magha, kept for success in a difficult undertaking, and named in the story of Rama before the crossing to Lanka.

Vijaya Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of the dark fortnight of Magha in the amanta reckoning used in Karnataka; the purnimanta calendars of North India list the same day under Phalguna. The name means victory, and the phala said to follow is success in something already begun rather than a general blessing.

The mahatmya

The Skanda Purana sets it in the Ramayana. Rama, with the army halted on the shore and no way across to Lanka, asked what should be done. He was sent to the muni Bakadalbhya, whose ashrama stood on an island nearby, and the muni told him to keep the ekadashi of the dark fortnight of Magha along with the army. The procedure given is specific: a kalasha set on a heap of grain, coconut and leaves at its mouth, worship of Narayana through the day, a night without sleep, and the parana on the following day. The crossing succeeded. The purana then generalises in the usual way, that anyone held up in a difficulty with no visible way through may keep the day for the same reason.

In practice

The kalasha puja of the story is occasionally performed by those who know the text, but it is not general practice, and in most Karnataka households Vijaya Ekadashi is simply the ekadashi of that fortnight. There is no special food, no public observance and no temple festival attached to it. Where it is kept with a particular intention the intention is usually concrete: an examination, a court matter, a journey, a business that has stalled. That association is the only thing that marks the day out, and it comes from the story rather than from any separate ritual.

Not the same as Jaya

Jaya Ekadashi falls in the bright fortnight of the same month and its name also means victory. The two are separate observances with separate mahatmyas, distinguished only by the paksha, and they are confused often.

The rules of the fast, the timing of the parana and the viddha question are set out in the general post on ekadashi.
