Amalaki Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of the bright fortnight of Phalguna. Amalaki is the amla, the Indian gooseberry, nellikayi in Kannada, and the day is kept at the tree.
At the tree
This is the one ekadashi whose observance has a physical object at its centre. The ground at the foot of an amla tree is cleaned and a rangoli drawn, a kalasha is set there, and the tree is given the ordinary upacharas: water, sandal, flowers, a lamp at dusk. Some keep the night vigil under it. Where there is no tree to hand, a branch or the fruit serves, and in towns a plant in a pot does. The fruit is eaten at the parana, or put in the water of the bath.
The reason given is that Vishnu is held to be present in the amla, and in some accounts the tree is said to have come out of Brahma and to have been the first tree of all. The amla is also among the few fruits several traditions permit on fasting days, which makes the pairing practical as well as pious.
The mahatmya
The Brahmanda Purana gives the story of a hunter driven by hunger to Vaidisha on this day, who found the king Chitraratha and his people keeping the vrata at the amla tree and stayed through the night watching, eating nothing because there was nothing to eat. The purana says the unintended fast and vigil gave him birth as Vasuratha, son of the king of Jayanti, and a long and just reign. The phala usually quoted for the day is that of a thousand cows given away, which is the standard unit these texts use for a large merit.
Where it sits
The bright fortnight of Phalguna runs up to the full moon, so Amalaki falls a few days before Holi and the Kamana Habba. In North India it is folded into the days leading up to Holi and the colours are sometimes begun on it. In Karnataka it stays a quiet household observance and is not attached to the Kamana Habba at all.
The rules of the fast are in the general post on ekadashi.
