Akshaya Tritiya

The third tithi of bright Vaishakha, held to be auspicious for its whole length, and traditionally a day for giving rather than buying.

Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third tithi of the bright fortnight of Vaishakha. Akshaya means that which does not diminish, and the claim made for the day is that whatever is begun, given or accumulated on it is not lost.

When it falls

The day is the one on which the tritiya is running at sunrise. Because the whole day is treated as auspicious there is no further condition of midday or dusk to satisfy, which is unusual and is part of the point: this is one of the days that needs no muhurta calculated for it.

The Maharashtra formula counts three and a half such days in the year, the sade teen muhurta: Gudi Padwa, Akshaya Tritiya, Vijayadashami, and the half day of Bali Pratipada. Karnataka does not use that phrase but treats the day the same way, as suitable for house entry, for beginning a business, for the first ploughing, and for the sowing that is timed just before the rains.

One qualification is worth knowing. Strict practice holds that an act meant for the day should be performed while the tritiya is actually current, not merely on the calendar date. If the tithi ends in the forenoon, the morning is the part that counts. Anudina prints the start and end times, so this can be checked rather than assumed.

What the day carries

Several accounts are attached to it. It is named as the beginning of the Treta yuga. Vyasa is said to have begun dictating the Mahabharata to Ganesha on this day. Krishna is said to have given Draupadi the akshaya patra, the vessel that did not empty, and to have received Sudama on this day, sending him home to find his hut turned to a palace. The descent of Ganga is placed here by some accounts, though the day usually kept for that is Ganga Dussehra in the following month.

At Simhachalam the sandal paste covering the image is removed on this day and the nija rupa is shown for a few hours, once a year. At Puri the chandan yatra begins. In the Himalaya the doors of Badrinath usually open around this date.

Giving, and buying

The traditional observance is dana, and the gifts named are seasonal rather than costly: a pot of water, a hand fan, an umbrella, footwear, curd rice, cucumber, jaggery water, sesame. Vaishakha is the hottest part of the year in most of the peninsula, and what is given is what a traveller would need.

The modern association with buying gold is not old. It grew out of the jewellery trade in the last few decades and has spread through advertising rather than through any text. There is no harm in it, but a reader should know that the older sense of akshaya attaches to what is given away, not to what is brought home.

In households that seated Gauri at Gauri Tritiya a month earlier, this is the day she is given a send-off and the month of haldi kumkum invitations closes.
