Parashurama Jayanti marks the appearance of the sixth avatara of Vishnu, the brahmana who took up the axe. It falls on Tritiya, the third tithi of the bright fortnight of Vaishakha, which is the same tithi as Akshaya Tritiya.
Why it can fall on a different day from Akshaya Tritiya
Both observances sit on the same tithi, and most years they share a date, but they do not use the same reference moment and so they sometimes separate.
Akshaya Tritiya is reckoned at sunrise, in the ordinary way. Parashurama Jayanti is reckoned at pradosha, the period of about two and a half hours following sunset, because Parashurama is held to have appeared then. The day that carries the jayanti is therefore the day on whose dusk Tritiya is running.
When Tritiya begins in the afternoon, it touches the dusk of that day but not its sunrise, and Anudina puts the jayanti on that day and Akshaya Tritiya on the next. This is not two almanacs disagreeing. It is one tithi, measured at two different hours, exactly as described in Tithi: the lunar day.
The story
He was born to the sage Jamadagni and Renuka, and was given the axe by Shiva, whose disciple he became. The account in the Mahabharata and the puranas is that the king Kartavirya Arjuna and his men killed Jamadagni after a quarrel over the sage’s cow, and that Parashurama in answer cleared the earth of the warrior kings twenty-one times over. He then gave the conquered earth away to Kashyapa in a sacrifice and withdrew to the Mahendra mountain.
He is one of the chiranjivis, the deathless, and he appears in both the other epics: as the one who tests Rama with the bow at Mithila, and as the teacher of Bhishma, Drona and Karna. That a single figure teaches on both sides of the Mahabharata is deliberate, not a loose end.
Why the Karnataka coast in particular
The stretch of coast from Gokarna south is Parashurama Kshetra. The tradition is that he reclaimed it from the sea by hurling his axe from the Sahyadri, and the land that rose is the strip of Tulu Nadu and the Konkan. Communities along that coast keep him as their founding figure, and the temples at Gokarna and at several places in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi carry the association.
The observance itself is modest. It is a fast for those who keep it, worship of Vishnu, and recitation of the accounts of the avatara. It does not have the household ritual that Akshaya Tritiya has, and in most of Karnataka the day is known by the other name.
What readers get wrong
The axe is not a warrior’s weapon in the story: it is Shiva’s, given to a brahmana. The point of the narrative as the texts tell it is a brahmana taking on a kshatriya’s function when the kshatriyas fail, and then formally giving the earth back rather than ruling it. Retellings that make him simply a figure of vengeance leave out the sacrifice at the end, which is the part the texts treat as the resolution.
