Kartika Purnima

The full moon of Kartika: Tripurari Purnima, the peak of the month of lamps, and a principal day for river bathing.

Kartika Purnima is the full moon that closes the bright fortnight of Kartika. It carries more than one observance at once, and which of them a family keeps depends on where it stands: it is Tripurari Purnima to Shaivas, the high day of the Kartika lamps in Karnataka, a bathing day on the rivers, and Deva Deepavali at Kashi.

When it falls and why

It is Purnima, the fifteenth tithi of the bright fortnight of Kartika, and the day that carries it is the day on which Purnima is running at sunrise.

Purnima is the one tithi people think they can see, and that is where the trouble starts. The moment of exact full moon is an instant, and it can fall at any hour. The tithi called Purnima is the twelve degree span ending at that instant, so it can be running at a sunrise and be over by mid morning. Because the rule here is the sunrise tithi, the day the almanac names may be the day on which the moon looks fullest at night, or the day before it. Both are correct, in their own terms.

The month of lamps

In Karnataka the whole of Kartika is a lamp month. Lamps are lit at the tulasi katte and at the threshold through the month, and temples keep the deepotsava, the Shaiva temples most of all. An akasha deepa, a lamp raised on a tall pole or hung in a lantern, is kept burning for the month at many houses and shrines. The full moon is the peak of all this, when the largest number of lamps are lit, floated on tanks, and set in rows along temple walls. In the Sringeri sampradaya, as in Karnataka Shaiva practice generally, the lamp is the substance of the month, not an ornament on it.

Tripurari

The Shaiva account gives the day its name. Shiva destroyed Tripura, the three moving cities of the asuras, with a single arrow, at the moment the three came into a line. He is Tripurari for it, and the lamps are read as the burning of those cities. In Kashi this becomes Deva Deepavali, the gods coming down to the ghats with lamps, and the steps are lit end to end.

Bathing and giving

Kartika snana, the pre dawn bath through the month, ends on this day, and the last bath is taken in a river or a temple tank where one is at hand. It is a day for dana: lamps, sesame, blankets, food. Vaishnavas keep it as well, for the month of Kartika is Damodara’s month and Vishnu has risen from the chaturmasya only days before.

What is easily confused

Kartikai Deepam in Tamil Nadu is not this day, though it lands close to it. That festival is fixed by the nakshatra Krittika falling in the solar month of Kartikai, and it is marked by the beacon on Arunachala at Tiruvannamalai. The nakshatra and the full moon do not always coincide, so the two can be a day apart.

The birth anniversary of Guru Nanak also falls on this full moon in the Sikh reckoning, and is a separate observance sharing the date.
