ಕವಿ ಮಾಡುವುದು ಕಾವ್ಯವನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ. ಕೀರ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವುದು ಅವನಲ್ಲ.

ಖ್ಯಾತಿಂ ಗಮಯತಿ ಸುಜನಂ ಸುಕವಿರ್ವಿದಧಾತಿ ಕೇವಲಂ ಕಾವ್ಯಮ್ ।
ಪುಷ್ಣಾತಿ ಕಮಲಮಮ್ಭೋ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮ್ಯಾ ತು ರವಿರ್ನಿಯೋಜಯತಿ ॥

ख्यातिं गमयति सुजनं सुकविर्विदधाति केवलं काव्यम् ।
पुष्णाति कमलमम्भो लक्ष्म्या तु रविर्नियोजयति ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಖ್ಯಾತಿಮ್ ಗಮಯತಿ (ख्यातिम् गमयति, khyātim gamayati) = ಕೀರ್ತಿಗೆ ಒಯ್ಯುತ್ತದೆ (carries to fame)
ಸುಜನಮ್ (सुजनम्, sujanam) = ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವನನ್ನು (the good man)
ಸುಕವಿಃ (सुकविः, sukaviḥ) = ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕವಿ (the good poet)
ವಿದಧಾತಿ ಕೇವಲಮ್ ಕಾವ್ಯಮ್ (विदधाति केवलम् काव्यम्, vidadhāti kevalam kāvyam) = ಕಾವ್ಯವನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ (only makes the poem)
ಪುಷ್ಣಾತಿ (पुष्णाति, puṣṇāti) = ಪೋಷಿಸುತ್ತದೆ (nourishes)
ಕಮಲಮ್ (कमलम्, kamalam) = ಕಮಲವನ್ನು (the lotus)
ಅಮ್ಭಃ (अम्भः, ambhaḥ) = ನೀರು (water)
ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮ್ಯಾ ತು (लक्ष्म्या तु, lakṣmyā tu) = ಶೋಭೆಯೊಡನೆ ಮಾತ್ರ (but with its splendour)
ರವಿಃ ನಿಯೋಜಯತಿ (रविः नियोजयति, raviḥ niyojayati) = ಸೂರ್ಯ ಜೋಡಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ (it is the sun that joins it)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕವಿ ಮಾಡುವುದು ಕಾವ್ಯವನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ. ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವನನ್ನು ಕೀರ್ತಿಗೆ ಒಯ್ಯುವುದು ಆ ಕಾವ್ಯ. ಕಮಲವನ್ನು ನೀರು ಪೋಷಿಸುತ್ತದೆ, ಆದರೆ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಶೋಭೆಯನ್ನು ಜೋಡಿಸುವವನು ಸೂರ್ಯ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

The good poet only makes the poem; it is the poem that carries a good man to fame. Water nourishes the lotus, but it is the sun that joins it to its splendour.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಕಮಲಕ್ಕೆ ನೀರು ಬೇಕು, ಆದರೆ ಅದು ಅರಳುವುದು ಸೂರ್ಯ ಬಂದಾಗ. ಎರಡು ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಕೆಲಸ, ಎರಡೂ ಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುದು ಈ ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯ ಚಂದ.

The lotus needs water, but it opens when the sun comes. Two different tasks, and both are needed. That is the charm of the comparison.

ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀ ಎಂಬ ಪದಕ್ಕೆ ಶೋಭೆ, ಸಂಪತ್ತು ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥ. ಕಮಲ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿಯ ಆಸನವೂ ಹೌದು. ಆ ಎರಡನೆಯ ಅರ್ಥ ಸಾಲಿನ ಹಿಂದೆ ನಿಂತಿದೆ.

The word lakshmi means both splendour and wealth, and the lotus is also Lakshmi’s seat. That second sense stands behind the line.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುವುದು ನಮ್ಮ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿದೆ, ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿಗುವ ಮನ್ನಣೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಈ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸ ತಿಳಿದವನಿಗೆ ನಿರಾಸೆ ಕಡಿಮೆ.

Doing the work is in our hands; the recognition it receives is not. One who knows this difference is disappointed less often.

ಕೀರ್ತಿ ಬರದಿದ್ದರೂ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡುವುದನ್ನು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಬಾರದು ಎಂಬುದೇ ಇದರ ಒಳದನಿ. ನೀರು ತನ್ನ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಬಿಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

The undertone is that one should not stop doing the work well merely because fame does not come. Water does not stop doing its work.
